Manchester United v Ajax Preview, UEFA Europa League, Final, 24th May 2017

Manchester United head into this game having had an average season on the domestic front by their standards and despite big money signings of Ibrahimovic and Pogba, United failed to secure a champions league place for next season which now means that they must win this tournament on Wednesday night in oder to secure a place in that competition.

United picked up their first win in five league games on the final day of the season when beating Crystal Palace 2-0 at home, despite manager Jose Mourinho having fielded a somewhat weakened team and that will definitely have boosted everyone’s confidence for this one.

Ajax head into the game having had a very good season indeed and only just got pipped for the Eredivisie title by one point by Feyenoord as their season came to a conclusion last weekend. Ajax won four of their last five league matches played and having looked very strong during this tournament so far, they do look like giving Manchester United a tough battle come Wednesday night.

Manchester United Team News :

Bailly is suspended, while Mourinho has confirmed Sergio Romero will keep his place in goal over David de Gea, which does seem to suggest that de Gea will be moving on during the summer.

A serious knee injury prevents Zlatan Ibrahimovic playing in his home country, while Marcos Rojo, Ashley Young and Luke Shaw are long-term absentees.

Marouane Fellaini (hamstring) and Chris Smalling (toe) trained on the eve of the match after sitting out the Premier League finale against Palace, but no news has been released as to if either player will take part in this one as of yet.

Ajax Team News :

Ajax will be without suspended Nick Viergever, while fellow defender Daley Sinkgraven has resumed training after a recent knee injury but is not deemed ready to feature.

Davy Klaassen will skipper Peter Bosz’s side, with Chelsea loanee Bertrand Traore set to line-up in attack.

Manchester United v Ajax Head to Head Statistics:

Wednesday night’s final from the Friends Arena, Stockholm will become only the 3rd meeting between the two clubs over the years and as we can see from our head to head statistic table below, no club has any real advantage heading into this game as both have managed one win each.

24/05/17 UEL Manchester United – Ajax  – : –
23/02/12 UEL Manchester United – Ajax  1 : 2
16/02/12 UEL Manchester United – Tottenham Hotspur  0 : 2

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

3 goals have been scored in the previous two meeting between the two clubs and this produces us with an average goals per game statistic of exactly 1.50 and would seem to indicate that this game should see between 2 or 3 goals scored on Wednesday night in Stockholm.

Manchester United v Ajax Match Predictions, Banker Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets

The good thing about this tournament now is that the winners will automatically qualify for the champions league next season and with Manchester United having missed out of securing a place in the tournament this season by only managing a disappointing 6th place finish, this is now their only way of securing a place in Europe’s biggest footballing event.

Ajax will qualify for the champions league regardless of if they win or lose this match, but with the way the side has been playing this season they do look more than capable of beating Manchester United in this one, despite what the online bookmakers seem to think and for me Ajax do look the clear value play here at their current best price available.

Onto some predictions then and my Banker Free Tip for this game is going to be for Ajax to Win as with events that have happened in Manchester recently, the United players will no doubt still be feeling very upset and a Europa League Final is probably the last thing that any of them would want to be involved in at the moment.

My First Goalscorer Free Tip for this game will be for Ajax striker Davy Klaassen to Score the 1st Goal of the Game as with an impressive 14 goals this season, 9 of those having been 1st goals of the game, he looks the stand out choice here to get the first goal of this final.
