Serena Williams v Garbine Muguruza, Wimbledon Final, Saturday 11th July 2015.

On Thursday we see the obsolete destruction of Maria Sharapova in a 6 – 2 and 6 – 4 run of sets. Serena Williams has beaten one of the worlds richest female tennis players and hasn’t lost to her since way back in 2014. Sharapova has lost fourteen sets to Serena Williams since that year and admits that each time she has to face Maria she must stay focused and try to be at her best. Especially seeing as though Sharapova was once the worlds number one seed. Williams now faces Garbine Muguruza who did manage to beat her last year in the French Open and also did take a set off Williams in this years Australian Open, which is of course better than what Maria Sharapova has achieved in the last ten years.

Garbine Muguruza is hoping to be the first Spanish tennis player to win at Wimbledon since way back when Martinez won it in 1994, which is shocking when looking at the sporting talent that usually comes out of Spain in a majority of the worlds competitive sports. Only two other women from Spain have ever put up worthy fights in the finals, with Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario and Lili de Alvarez being the two way back in the 1920’s. Muguruza knows all about the dangers that come with hard hitting Serena Williams, with aces seeming to come from nowhere and very often. The US star even managed to hit 13 aces against Sharapova which also includes three in the final game of the match. Garbine Muguruza also knows that it is rarely known for Williams to lose a match so late on in these prestigious grand slams but will no doubt be holging out some hope that see herself can up her game and beat such a formidable champion.

Williams News:

Most of the latest news regarding Serena Williams all seems to be coming out mainly about her private life. Seeing as though big time stars such as Drake and John Legend seem to be occupying her player box to keep her company. This could be the first time Serena Williams has won four grand slams in a year, something she would love to achieve in her heavily decorated tennis career. Having already won the Australian and French Opens this year she also won the US Open last summer.

Muguruza News:

Twenty one year old Garbine Muguruza makes this her first ever Wimbledon final and on top of that is also her first ever grand slam final of her young career. She will know that beating Serena Williams is a possibility, especially as she achieved this last year in the French Open. Much like compatriot Rafael Nadal who has been a Spanish star of the gentleman’s game, Garbine Muguruza can only dream of achieving such heights in the women’s side of the sport.

Serena Williams v Garbine Muguruza Head to Head Statistics:

The two have only met three times in the past, but this will be due to the fact that the Spaniard has only been on the professional scene for a short number of years. Serena Williams is the name you would expect to win all of these encounters, yet surprisingly enough that record has been tarnished due to Garbine Muguruza beating Serena Williams in the French Open last year, and thus knocking her out of the Grand Slam.

2015 Serena Williams v Garbine Muguruza 2-6, 6-3, 6-2
2014 Serena Williams v Garbine Muguruza 6-2, 6-2
2013 Serena Williams v Garbine Muguruza 6-2, 6-0

Serena Williams v Garbine Muguruza Wimbledon Form

The fact this is Garbine Muguruza’s first even grand slam final clearly means it puts the Spaniard behind twenty times winner Serena Williams. She has won Wimbledon singles five times thus far, as well as winning the doubles with her sister five times. She has also won the mixed doubles once with Max Mirnyi back in 1998.

Serena Williams v Garbine Muguruza Match Predictions & Set Betting Tips

With Serena Williams looking to make this her sixth singles Wimbledon grand slam win the bookmakers are no doubt behind the US born player. The odds from all the top bookmakers are clearly making the number one seed the favourite and giving her opponent Garbine Muguruza very little chance to make it her first grand slam win. If that wasn’t daunting enough for the twenty one year old Spanish girl, then also knowing this is her first ever grand slam final couldn’t make her nerves any less. But lets not take away from the fact that even though Muguruza is young, she has already beaten Serena Williams in the past, having knocked her out of the French Open in 2014.

My predictions for this Wimbledon final do want to back the underdog here, but I need to be honest with myself and acknowledge the fact that Serena Williams is such a strong tennis player and also very rarely messes up so late in the final stages of major grand slams. So taking that in mind I will go both ways and have a cheeky tipple of Garbine Muguruza in a three set thriller and back her to win which I am sure all neutrals would love to see come Saturday. The next and more obvious one to take is for Serena Williams to come out on Saturday and completely dominate, much like she did against her last opponent Maria Sharapova. So for that one I do plan to take Williams to win with an easy two set game.
