Criterion Stakes Race Preview

One of the featured races for Saturday afternoon is the Bet365 Criterion Stakes which comes from the very famous Newmarket Race Course and at the time of writing this preview, has nine declared runners all vying to pick up some of the £60k Prize Fund on offer.

Let’s take a closer look at some of the nine runners and more importantly decide on which one has the best chance of winning this race which will be run over 7 furlongs on the July Course.

No. 1 LIBRANO currently a 10/1 shot with Betfred. A previous course and distance winner, which already gives him a chance and with having a fine run last time out coming home 4 and 3/4 lengths behind Declaration of War in the Group 1, Queen Anne Stakes back on the 18th of June at Ascot a race that he found a bit long in my opinion.

This distance will be much more in his favour for this race and with excellent early pace he could have quite a few stretched out if given licence to dictate the running, but it does seem unlikely that he will still be in front when they cross the finishing line and others are prefered.

No.2 COCOZZA currently a 100/1 shot with BetVictor. Would need to produce the best run of his life to finish in the first four home in this sort of company let alone win it, so we can safely draw a line through this one.

No.3 HAWKEYETHENOO currently a 3/1 shot with Bet365. I gave this horse as my Each Way selection in the Group 1, Diamond Jubilee Stakes back on the 22nd June at Ascot and was extremely disappointed with the run despite him finishing really well at the end.

Unfortunately this horse just seems to find traffic problems every race he has been in recently, although in my opinion a lot of that has been down to Graham Lee and with Jamie Spencer now taking the ride for this race, I would certainly expect to see Jim Goldie’s five year old to be involved in the finish as he really does have a fantastic turn of foot.

No.4 PASTORAL PLAYER currently the 11/4 favourite with Paddy Power. Also had a fine run last time out when chasing home Amarillo in the Group 3, Time Form Jury Stakes on the 8th of June which was run over the same distance as this race on Saturday afternoon.

Graham Lee was again at fault in that race in my opinion as again the horse was put into a position where no room was available when it needed to be and although the gap did come and the horse finished very well, it was just too late. However, George Baker has been given the ride for this race and like HawkeyetheNoo looks certain to be involved at the finish again running off the same mark as his last race.

No. 5 PRODUCER currently a 3/1 shot with Sky Bet. Was beaten 4 lenghts in the Group 3, Investec Diomed Stakes back on May 30th at Epsom and didn’t really get the 9 furlongs in my opinion that day, weakening just inside the final furlong and this shorter trip will also be much more in his favour.

However, this horse doesn’t have a great record around Newmarket Race Course and having never won on it’s current mark, I can see one or two other involved in this lineup being too strong when it counts.

Criterion Stakes Race Tips, Predictions & Naps.

I was very impressed with the way Pastoral Player ran on in his last race and with conditions looking to be in his favour and the talented George Baker in the pilot’s seat I can see why most of the online bookmakers have Hughie Morrison’s six year old as the one to beat.
