2014 Cheltenham Gold Cup Race Preview

An exciting week of racing action comes to an end of friday afternoon with the Cheltenham Gold Cup being the main focus of all racing fans across the country. This year will see 14 runners and riders attempt to come home in front of what will no doubt be a packed out cheering crowd and go down in racing history as having tasted victory in what is one of the most prestigious racing events around the world.

Last year’s winner Bobs Worth will be looking to become the first winner since Best Mate back in 2003 to win back to back Gold Cup title’s and this horse who is trained by Nicky Henderson and ridden by Barry Geraghty will take a lot of stopping if he can produce another performance like he did last year when staying on strongly up the Cheltenham hill to fend off the challenge of Mossley.

The Paul Nicholls trained Silviniaco Conti is also a well fancied by the punters and this 8 year old horse was an impressive winner of the King George IV on Boxing Day when beating the highly respected Cue Card by 3 and 1/2 lengths and although he has not been seen on the race-course since that victory, Paul Nicholls has said that he has never been in better shape.

Last Instalment is another that will make a lot of people’s short list as his victory in the Hennessy Gold Cup when beating Tidal Bay by 9 lengths was an extremely good performance and although this race is a couple of furlongs longer, this should not be a problem for this big strong horse who looks like he can stay all day.

2014 Cheltenham Gold Cup Trends

10 of the last 13 winners had all won or finished 2nd at the Cheltenham Festival before and 18 of the last 20 winners were aged between 7 and 9.

Just 1 of the last 20 winners won this race aged 10 or older, with just 2 winners in 50 years having won the race with under 6 previous races run over fences.

9 of the last 14 winners contested the King George VI Chase at Kempton and 9 of the last 12 winners did not run before in the same calendar year.

2014 Cheltenham Gold Cup Betting Preview, Race Predictions & Tips

I really like the look of Last Instalment here as his victory in the Hennessey Gold Cup was extremely impressive having had Tidal Bay 9 lengths away back in 2nd and if he can produce another display like that, then I can easily see him causing a bit of a shock come friday afternoon and he is going to be my main pick to win this race.

The favourite and last years winner Bobs Worth is obviously going to take a lot of beating as he really did stay on well up the Cheltenham hill last year, but he did have a complete nightmare in the Betfair Chase last November where he could only finish 6th and for me that has certainly made me believe that he can be taken on this year as his current price is very low and offers little in the way of value.

A P McCoy was 2nd in this race last year when aboard Mossley and he partners the French raider Triolo D’alene who was an eye catching winner in the Hennessey Gold Cup at Newbury back in November last year and another performance like that would surely see this horse go very close and is going to be my Each/Way saver bet for this race.
