2014 World Hurdle Race Preview

A very entertaining opening couple of days at the Cheltenham Festival is followed by action on thursday afternoon which will see the featured race of the day being the Ladbrokes World Hurdle which is a Grade 1 Event run over 3 miles.

The Paul Nicholls trained Big Bucks has dominated this race over the last 5 years having won it 4 times, but was unable to defend his title last year due to injury and having only managed to finish 3rd in the Cleeves Hurdle back at the end of January this year, many people believe that he is not the same horse since his injury setback.

The current favourite for this year’s race is the W P Mullins trained Annie Power which is ridden by Ruby Walsh and with this 6 year old having yet to lose a race, she will obviously be attracting plenty of support from the Irish who many have down as their banker of the meeting.

Owner J P McManus has two entries in this race and Champion Jockey A P McCoy has opted to ride At Fishers Cross instead of the unbeaten More of That which is probably down to the fact that At Fishers Cross has had plenty of experience around Cheltenham having won the Albert Bartlett Novices Hurdle last year at the Festival when staying on strongly up the Cheltenham hill and with conditions to suit this 7 year old looks likely to run another big race on thursday afternoon.

2013 Winner : Solwhit

2014 World Hurdle Trends

Last year’s winner Solwhit was the first Irish trained horse in 18 years to have won this race and all Irish fans will be hoping that the Mullins and Walsh combination of Annie Power can keep that trend going on thursday afternoon.

The previous 26 winners of this race have all been placed in their final preperation race for the Cheltenham Festival and The Cleeve Hurdle and Long Walk Hurdle seem to be the best indicators of form for this race.

French bred horses have an excellent record in this race with 8 of them having won in the last 12 runnings of this race.

Horses that make the running in this race look ones to avoid, as only one front runner has made the places in this race since 1996.

2014 World Hurdle Betting Preview, Race Predictions & Tips

If Big Bucks was anything close to his best form then he would obviously take a lot of beating, but having failed to get home in the Cleeves Hurdle back in January it does seem that his domination of this race is close to being over and with a number of younger and fitter challengers in the race, it really would be some achievement to see this veteran hurdler pick up his fifth consecutive victory.

Annie Power looks a worthy favourite as having never been beaten at a race-course, she does look like an upcoming star of the future and after an impressive eight length victory over Zarkander in Dornan Engineering Hurdle at Cheltenham back in January this will have no doubt seen plenty of people jumping on the Ante Post Prices which were available for her to win this race and she will be a very popular winner if she can get her head in front when it matters and for me looks the clear pick to win this race based on recent form.

At Fishers Cross showed tremendous character when staying on strongly up the Cheltenham Hill to finish second in the Cleeves Hurdle back in January at Cheltenham and with A P McCoy on board this 7 year old definitely looks one for the short list, especially having won round the testing Cheltenham race-course three times from his four previous races and he is going to be my each/way saver for this race.
