2014 Queen Mother Champion Chase Race Preview

After a first day of edge of the seat action, the Cheltenham Festival returns to our television’s on wednesday afternoon with the featured race of the day being the Queen Mother Champion Chase which is a Grade 1 event for 5year olds and over and is run over 2 miles.

Trainer Nicky Henderson and jockey Barry Geraghty have will be going for a third successive victory on wednesday afternoon having won it in 2012 with Finian’s Rainbow and then again last year with Sprinter Sacre and although last year’s winner is not here this year to defend his crown, Nicky Henderson and Barry Geraghty still have a chance to make it a hatrick of wins with 7yr old Captain Conan.

The Moore family are represented by 8yr old Sire De Grugy, who is the clear favourite to win the race at time of writing this preview and having won four of his last five races, he obviously holds a very realistic chance of securing trainer Gary Moore’s first ever win in the race.

Sizing Europe has finished second in this race in the past two years and although he was completely blown away by Sprinter Sacre last season, now the Nicky Henderson speed machine is not here this year due to health problems, the Sizing Europe connections will obviously see this as their year to win this race and for me he is definitely worth getting on as your main each/way selection in this race.

2014 Queen Mother Champion Chase Trends

The last fourteen Arkle Winners that have gone on to run this race the following year have all been placed, but unfortunately Simonsig who won the Arkle last year is not in contention this year.

The last sixteen winners of this race in previous years had raced no more than four times during the current season, so that does seem to put a huge question mark over current favourite Sire De Grugy who has raced five times this season.

Eleven of the last twelve winners of this race have all been rated at 160 or above and won at least one Grade 1 event, so Baily Green, Hinterland, Module and Special Tiara who all have a rating less than 160 for this race, do not fit this trend.

Paul Nicholls has an excellent record in this race over the last ten years and won this race twice in succession in 2008 and 2009 with the classy Master Minded.

2014 Queen Mother Champion Chase Betting Preview, Race Predictions & Tips

Captain Conan won the 2012 Arkle Trophy with Sire De Grugy behind him that day in second place, but was well beaten by him in the Tingle Creek Chase back in December when Sire De Grugy came home in impressive style winning by 4 lengths with Somersby back in second and Captain Conan in third and with the ground drying out every day, Sire De Grugy does look a worthy favourite here.

However, Sire De Grugy has been beaten this season and that came in the Shloer Chase at Cheltenham back in November last year when Kid Cassidy powered on up the hill to win by 3 and 1/4 lengths from Sire De Grugy in second and with the Cheltenham fences seemingly having proved difficult for Sire De Grugy to cope with that day, he does look worth opposing in this race and I really like the chances of the Kid Cassidy to make at least the places in this one at what are very generous odds indeed.

Sizing Europe is another horse with a big chance of winning this race as although he is getting on a bit now at the ripe old age of 12yrs old this horse still has bags of ability and has finished runner up in this race in the last two years and with the classy Sprinter Sacre not involved this year, Sizing Europe will never get a better chance to win this race and he is going to be my main pick for this race.
