2014 Champion Hurdle Race Preview

The 2014 Cheltenham Festival begins this Tuesday with the featured race of the day being the highly sought after Champion Hurdle Challenge Trophy, which is a race run over 2 miles, 110 yards and has 9 runners and riders declared.

A race of this nature attracts some of the best hurdler’s in the world and this year is no different with the W P Mullins trained Hurricane Fly who is ridden by Ruby Walsh looking to follow up on his victory last year and make it a hatrick of wins in this race as he also won it back in 2011.

Nigel Twiston Davies last won this race back in 1994 with 50/1 shot Arctic Kinsman and he will be looking to get his hands back on the trophy this year with his entry The New One who is ridden by son Sam Twiston Davies and the online bookmakers currently have this 6 year old the current favourite to win the race.

My Tent or Yours is also another entry that has a very real chance of winning this race, especially with A P McCoy in the saddle and with Nicky Henderson’s 7 year old has been in excellent form of late having won all three of his races this season and that is the perfect form to bring with you to what is the biggest jumps race event of the year.

2013 Winner : Hurricane Fly

2014 Champion Hurdle Trends

Only one horse of the last twenty Christmas Hurdle winners has been good enough to have gone on to win the Champion Hurdle in the same season. Hurricane Fly will be bidding to be the first back-to-back winner of the race since Hardy Eustace in 2005 and with it pick up his third win in the Champion Hurdle having won it back in 2011.

Neptune Novices’ Hurdle winners have a decent record in this race, with Istabraq and Hardy Eustace following up their victories in the novice ranks by winning the Champion Hurdle a year later and Nigel Twiston-Davies entry ‘The New One’ won the Neptune Novices’ Hurdle last season and obviously has a big chance based on those statistics.

2014 Champion Hurdle Betting Preview, Race Predictions & Tips

Difficult to go against Hurricane Fly here as this horse has already shown twice that he knows how to win this race and with the conditions likely to be Good to Soft he should have not problems with the ground. Ruby Walsh takes the mount and he always seems to have an excellent time of it when appearing at the Cheltenham Festival, so you couldn’t really ask for a better jockey on board and for me he looks the most likely winner of this race, which would put him in the history books as the first horse since Hardy Eustace back in 2005 to win back to back title’s.

Nigel Twiston-Davies last won this race back in 1994 with a 50/1 shot called Arctic Kinsman and although his entry for this race is a much smaller price, the fact that ‘The New One’ won the Neptune Novices Hurdle last season the trends for this race suggest that he also have a very realistic chance of winning this race.

However, I like A P McCoy’s mount ‘My Tent or Yours’ as the biggest danger to Hurricane Fly in this race as this horse was a very impressive winner of the Christmas Hurdle when beating The New One by 1/2 a length and with McCoy in the saddle you just know that the Champion Jockey will be riding this horse all the way to the finish under his famous McCoy Drive.
