2014 British Open Preview, Royal Liverpool Golf Club, July 17th 2014

Tiger Woods will be a popular choice having now returned back to the scene having undergone surgery and rehabilitation for a trapped nerve which has seen him miss most the action over the past twelve months. Last years defending Champion, Phil Mickleson is also involved and will be looking to win his first major of the season and will again be a popular choice for many.

The weather forecast for the next few important days will see the tournament will get underway with mostly dry, humid conditions, but with cooler air approaching from friday afternoon there is a real possibility of heavy showers and thunder-storms which will make conditions a lot more testing for the players.

The online bookmakers are finding it difficult to name a clear favourite at the moment with three players, Justin Rose, Adam Scott and Henrik Stenson all around 16/1 best price to win the tournament. Rory McIlroy, Tiger Woods and Sergio Garcia are best price of around 20/1 with most companies with Phil Mickleson, Graeme McDowell and Martin Kraymer all trading around 25/1.

The Main Contenders

1. Martin Kaymer :- Became the first player to win the Players Championship and the US Open in the same season this year and with the way he is playing it is impossible to rule him out capturing a third successive major in this tournament. Kaymer is currently ranked 6th place in the Fedex Cup points table and his currently a best price of 25/1 with Coral who are paying out on the first 6 places.

2. Phil Mickleson :- Has 7 top 25 finishes this season and is the current defending champion of this tournament having picked up his 5th major tournament victory by winning last year at Muirfield when coming home on the final day with an impressive 5 under (66). Mickleson could only manage 22nd place in the 2006 British Open, but will be a popular favourite for many punters looking for someone who will be up there with a chance on the final day and is currently a best price of 25/1 with Paddy Power who are paying out on the first 7 places.

3. Jordan Spieth :- Was runner up in the Masters, finished tied for the 4th place at the Players Championship and has posted 7 top 10 finishes along the way this season in what has been an incredible year for the new kid on the block. He has quickly become a firm favourite with all golf fans, especially the younger generation and despite his age, is certainly in with a big chance of winning this tournament at a current best price of 40/1 with Betfred who are paying out on the first 8 places.

4. Tiger Woods :- 14 time major winner and holder of 3 claret jugs, has had a lot of problems this season with injury to his back, but would not be here if he wasn’t 100% fit and confident of winning. Won this tournament back in 2006 when it was last played at the Royal Liverpool golf club and although many people believe his best days are behind him, rule him out at your peril and at a current best price of 25/1 with Ladbrokes, who are paying out on the first 6 places, it would not be a shock to see him involved in the finish on the final day.

Others to Consider

1. Jim Furyk :- Has 2 second place finishes and 10 top 25 finishes in just 13 events he has participated in and having also came 4th in this tournament back in 2006 he obviously knows his way around this challenging course and at huge odds of 60/1 with BetFred who are paying out on the top 7 places, he could be well worth getting on each/way for those looking for a monster pay out.

2. Adam Scott :- The current world number 1 and runner up in the British Open back in 2012. Does seem to have a habit of choking when getting his head in front as shown during that 2012 British Open when he surrendered a 4 shot lead with 4 holes to play, but most players will tell you that those things only make you a stronger player in the future and at a current best price of 16/1 with BetVictor who are playing out on the first 6 places, the Australian will certainly have plenty of support from the punters.

3. Henrik Stenson : One of my favourites players in golf and someone who a lot of people seem to overlook when it comes to the big major tournaments. Has only missed the cut once this season in the 9 tournaments he has entered and has had 2 top 10 finishes. Has played well during previous British Open tournaments and although never having won it, he has posted a top 3 position 3 times since 2008 and is currently a best price of 16/1 with Totepool who are paying out on the first 8 places.

2014 British Open Betting Tips, Overview & Predictions

With the return of Tiger Woods who was a prolific winner of this tournament at this golf course back in 2006, there are going to be a lot of people that believe that he can end his season on a high having missed most of the year out with a back problem that has required an operation to fix and many will question whether or not he is healthy enough to have the game to be involved on the final day of this tournament.

However, I think the time off from the golf course has been just what Tiger needed and I am expecting him to go very close indeed to winning this tournament when all is said and done come sunday evening and at his current odds of 25/1 with Ladbrokes, he is going to be one of my main Banker picks in this preview.

Martin Kaymer is going to be my second Banker pick as with him having already won the Players Championship and US Open in the same season he will be brimming with confidence of adding another major title to that list and if he can do the impossible and win this tournament, it would be a remarkable historic achievement.

Having a wager on this tournament just would not be the same without adding a couple of lively outsiders and my first Saver pick is going to be the young but very talented Jordan Spieth as I have been extremely impressed with what I have seen from him over the last year and it really would be a fairytale ending to the season if the young lad won this tournament.

My additional Saver is going to be the ever reliable Jim Furyk as with bags of experience in majors he is someone who always gives it a 100% and having had a 4th place finish in this tournament back in 2006, he could be a huge outsider that is still involved on the final days play.
