Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix Preview, Sunday 16th March 2014

Well here we go as we kick start the new Formula 1 campaign with a bang in Australia! This year has seen some of the biggest changes ever made to the sport in some time as the cars now use a new 1.6L turbocharged V6 engine. On top of that there are new rules in regards to the cars aerodynamics and energy recovery systems. The old cars once used a 2.4 litre V8 engine with around 750bhp and although the new engines are 150bhp less they can still reach the same speeds due to the new energy recovery system. the gearboxes have also seen a change with the newer version getting an extra forward ration which was something a lot of the teams voted for last season.

Another thing to consider is the new fuel allowance, where as last years cap was unlimited yet roughly using 160kg’s of fuel per race, we now see it reduced drastically to 100kg maximum per race. Which with the engine size reduction should be very doable although poses another challenge to the teams and drivers.

We also see the minimum weight of the cars increased by around 50kgs due to the engine changes. On top of that there are changes to the exhaust systems where we are now only allowed a single tail pipe to last years two. The last things are the nose height reduction due to safety issues and the front and rear wing changes to make them slightly slimmer.

Australian Grand Prix Previous Winners

We see Jenson Button enjoying two wins in the 5 previous races in Australia although I doubt he has the team and car to do it again this year as he failed to even make the top 10 in his McLaren-Mercedes. Lewis Hamilton done extremely well to finish in poll on Saturday and questions are being asked if the Brit can win his first Australian Grand Prix since 2008.

Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix Race Predictions, Tips & Winner Bets.

Being a house hold who look forward to this time of year when the new Formula 1 season kicks the first qualifier on Saturday was indeed a great spectacle with many great twists and turns. Something that has been seriously lacking in previous years when all you could expect to see was Sebastian Vettel leading the race from lap two and then winning.

My predictions for Sunday will of course back the favourite Lewis Hamilton to win in some form as I can see the Englishman being extremely hungry for success this year now the new car changes are in. Another one you could back is the local driver Ricciardo who is sure to rise to the occasion as the crowd sing his name.  My 2nd prediction however will be a little safer with Ricciardo to finish in a podium position.
