West Ham United v Manchester City Preview, League Cup, Tuesday 21st January 2014

West Ham United have a mountain to climb at home on Tuesday night and only a miracle will see them progress into the Capital One Cup Final. Losing so heavily in the first leg had some fans and pundits predicting that it was Big Sam’s last game in charge. Yet the West Ham United board room have expressed still that they 100% back their manager. I’m a little unsure how Sam Allardyce will approach this match as a victory is well out of the relegation battling sides grasp and he may just send out a weakened side in aid to rest players for the Premiership games that are fast approaching. But then does he once again want to be on the end of a 6 – 0 drumming much like the 1st leg?

With Manchester City next run of games looking very tame I can see Pellegrini resting a number of his key players for Tuesday’s match. City also have an FA Cup tie against Championship side Watford next week which could be another chance to also rest players ahead of the Tottenham Hotspurs and Chelsea games which are coming up at the end of this month. Manchester City are seen as favourites to win the Premiership this season and they also have the chance of completing the treble much like their neighbours Manchester United. So questions will be asked if he does rest his team against Watford but I can’t see any issues for Pellegrini to play a weakened side for Tuesday.

West Ham United Team News:

Some great news for West Ham in recent weeks see’s English International Andy Carrol return from injury after missing most of the season. He made an instant impact against Cardiff City where he assisting in Mark Noble’s 90th minute winner. West Ham are still without Ricardo Vaz Te who is recovering from a dislocated shoulder but do welcome back Guy Demel(concussion) and Joey O’Brien who has recovered from a knock. Also returning soon as Winston Read who has missed a couple of months due to an ankle injury.

Manchester City Team News:

Manchester City welcome back striker Steven Jovetic who is very excited to feature against West Ham after recovering from a hamstring injury that has kept him out since mid December. Although he hasn’t featured for Manchester City since October and has only made five appearances since his £22million move from Italian side Fiorentina in the Summer. Manchester City are however missing Samir Nasri until early March with crucial ligament damage to his knee. Also out is England international Jack Rodwell with his hamstring although he should be set to return in the coming weeks.

West Ham United v Manchester City Head to Head Statistics:

Since Manchester City’s take over a few years back we have seen them pretty much dominate West Ham United both home and away and even in the 87 games played in total we see City winning 41 to West Ham’s 31 with the remaining 15 games ending as a draw. City have also drawn 10 times away from home yet 11 wins at West Ham United ground makes the statistics just as impressive.

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

In these 87 games played since these two have met we have seen a total of 268 goals scored which is giving us an average of just over 3 goals per game and given West Ham United’s last result against City we could see a lot more. But with Pellegrini likely to play a weaker side I can see the goal average of 3 being more likely.

West Ham United v Manchester City Recent Form (Left to Right)

West Ham United: L W L L L

Manchester City: W W W W D

Manchester City are in exceptional form right now and are on course to complete the treble if things play out well. Having not lost a game in 17 appearances in all competitions it does seem so long ago when they did manage to lose to relegation placed Sunderland in a 1 – 0 shock result.

West Ham United v Manchester City Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

This game on Tuesday I feel will be won quite easily by the away side Manchester City. They are already six goals ahead on aggregate after the first leg see them demolish any chance of West Ham United winning a trophy this season. I can however see City manager Pellegrini resting a number of key first team players for the harder games fast approaching at the end of this month. Before that however they do face Championship side Watford in the FA Cup and even then I still see a weaker side being played as they will no doubt win there also. With Tottenham Hotspurs and Chelsea coming up these next two games would be his best chance of doing such.

So lets get down to some predictions, I don’t see another six goals being scored although I do feel the average goals per game average of 3 is more likely. I don’t see West Ham United scoring so all of those goals should be scored by the away side. We should be seeing Montenegro International Steven Jovetic start on Tuesday and I personally feel he will be raring to go and grab himself a goal as he looks to prove why they bought him for £22million in the Summer transfer window. So I think for him to score and Manchester City to win has a good chance of happening.
