Watford v Liverpool Preview, Premiership, Monday 1st May 2017.

Watford will need to look at every game as a must win now although to be honest I cannot see them going down with how the likes of Swansea City are playing. That said if Manchester United beat Swansea City on Saturday then Watford are safe from relegation woes. Watford have won three out of their last five games played and with those nine points have managed to avoid that dreaded drop back down into the Championships.

I do feel the run in to the end of the season for Watford is one of the hardest in the league. On top of Liverpool on Monday they also have to face Everton, Chelsea and Manchester City which I cannot see them getting any points from. They also have to face current champions Leicester City who now seem to have avoided relegation themselves with them being on the same points as Watford.

Liverpool are close to throwing away a top four finish this season and did not want to lose against relegation struggling side Crystal Palace recently. The club only have four games remaining and cannot afford to lose any. They have also won three in the last five games which is keeping them in it, with the other game a 2 – 2 draw against bogey side AFC Bournemouth at the beginning of April.

Liverpool have two home games remaining which will be Southampton next week, and then their last game of the season against Middlesbrough, which will be tough as they are close to relegation themselves. The other away game they have yet to play is against West Ham United who themselves are also struggling for wins, with them only eight points away from the bottom three positions.

Watford Team News :

Defender Craig Cathcart is a doubt due to a knee issue while midfielder Valon Behrami has just returned from a long term hamstring injury. Players that are confirmed out are Roberto Pereyra (knee), striker Mauro Zarare (ACL) and Younes Kaboul (hamstring) which isn’t great for home side Watford.

Liverpool Team News :

The main news for Liverpool is that Adam Lallana could be fit to make a return come Monday. The attacker has returned to training after suffering a groin strain a month ago. Club captain Jordan Henderson is still out with a foot injury while Sadio Mane, Ragnar Klavan and Danny Ings are all out for the remainder of the season. Another player to return to training is Daniel Sturridge who missed the game against Crystal Palace with a hip issue.

Watford v Liverpool Head to Head Statistics:

In the last five matches played against each other it is pretty much a domination by Liverpool with four easy wins and then that humiliating loss back in 2015. In total they have met on twenty one occasions where Watford have only won four times. Liverpool however have won sixteen times with the last game ending as a draw back in 1984.

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

In the twenty one games played against each other we have seen a total of sixty seven goals scored. This is going to give us a goals per game average of 3.2. Now the last time these two clubs met we did see Liverpool destroy their opponents six goals to one, which will help in taking that average up slightly. So that said I’d still be inclined to go with the below selection for bank holiday Mondays game.

Watford v Liverpool Recent Form All Competitions (Left to Right)

Watford: L W L W W

Liverpool: L W W D W

Both clubs recent form are close, yet it isn’t going to be Watford here with them not too far off the relegation positions. Liverpool did lose their last game against Crystal Palace which could effect their ending position come the end of the season. Liverpool are the favourites to win here come bank holiday Monday.

Watford v Liverpool Match Predictions, Banker Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets

Bank Holiday Monday Night Premier League action this week will be held at Vicarage Road with Watford set to host third place Liverpool. The game can be viewed live on Sky Sports 1 and of course in High Definition. This game could be an exciting one with Liverpool needing the win to stay in third place, where as Watford need the win to make sure they secure their Premier League stay for next season.

This does of course all depend on Saturday and Sundays fixtures. More importantly for Watford will be Swansea City’s game against Manchester United at Old Trafford. Sunderland sadly for them were relegated on Saturday when they failed to beat AFC Bournemouth at home. The 1 – 0 loss see them relegated with the next side likely to follow being Middlesbrough who are at home on Sunday against Manchester City.

Although Watford are sitting in thirteenth and nine points above Swansea City they should really be safe especially as they also have a game in hand over the Welsh club. Watford just need to relax and enjoy the game and coming away with a draw on Monday night would be an excellent result. With Liverpool losing to Crystal Palace recently it will fill Watford with some hope that they can also do it against Liverpool.

My predictions for this game are favouring the draw of some kind, with Liverpool struggling against Crystal Palace the other week. So for my banker prediction I am going for both teams to score and for the game to end as a draw. The other I am going for is a total of two to three goals scored on the night. The history between both clubs do show that there does always seem to be goals in the match so lets hope for more of the same come Monday.
