Spain v Italy Preview, Fifa Confederations Cup, Thursday 27th June 2013

With Spain as one of the favorites to win the Confederation Cup it is not surprising that the current World Cup holders are cruising through this competition to date. With thrashing Tahiti 10 goals to nil and Torres and co on fire it will take a world class team with any of stopping them.

It has been 28 international games now that Spain have been unbeaten, breaking a world record in the process with solid games against Nigeria and Uruguay where they won both quiet comfortably. But they still face tough opponents in Italy who have also had a respectable tournament regardless of being beat by current holders Brazil 4-2.

With the last time these two teams playing, the Italians will want to avenge the 4-0 thrashing they received in the European Championship Final in 2012. Italy however are not having the best of luck when it comes down to team news, with Mario Balotelli flown home with a thigh strain and now veteran play-maker Andrea Pirlo suffering with a strained muscle. But Spain are not without injuries themselves as Soldado and Manchester United target Fabregas fight to recover in time for Thursdays game.

Spain v Italy Team News

Spain Team News:

Many peoples favorites for this competition it is no surprise that Spain are having a great tournament thus far, having broke world records this week with an incredible 28 games unbeaten it can only lay a solid foundation to progress further past Italy and into the final of the Confederations Cup.

With slight concerns with Fabregas and Soldado who are battling to be fit for tomorrows game, the Spanish still have a world class bench to replace them with. Spain although confident, will still be wary going into this match as all previous games with the Italians have been close encounters, excluding the last where Spain thumped Italy 4-0 in the European Championship Final in 2012.

Likely Starting XI: (4-3-3) Casillas; Arbeloa, Ramos, Pique, Alba; Xavi, Busquets, Silva; Mata, Iniesta, Torres.

Italy Team News:

There are scores to settle on Thursday, with Italy wanting to get payback for the humiliating loss they experienced back in 2012 where Spain cruised to a 4-0 win in the European Championship Final. The Italians will fancy their chances here as every game the two European giants play, it always ends up being a close game.

With both teams winning 8 a piece and drawing 11 in the process. But without on form Balotelli you can only hope that the stand in strikers can cope with the pressure of scoring against a solid defense such as Spain’s. With Italy leaking goals, the back 4 will need to be on top of their game come Thursday as Spain are not holding any punches when it comes down to putting chances into the net.

Likely Starting XI: (4-2-3-1) Buffon; Abate, Barzagli, Chiellini, De Sciglio; Candreve, Aquilani; Marchisio, Montolivo, Diamanti; Giaccherini.

Thursday night’s match action from Estádio Governador Plácido Aderaldo Castelo sees World Cup and European Championship winners Spain do battle with Italy. It promises to be an incredible watch on BBC3 with both teams wanting to book their place in the Confederations Cup Final on Sunday.

With Italy wanting to get payback after the last fixture against the Spaniards it looks like the excitement is likely to explode come Thursday evening, although sadly without the likes of Balotelli who has flown home with an injury. Who is it left to who can fire in any potential goals for the Italians?

Who Has The Advantage?

These stats are from the last 5 games played over a time period of around 6 years, with the recent win for Spain embarrassing Italy in the European Championships Final 4-0. Also in the same competition and in the same year both teams met with a 1-1 draw in the group stages.

But with both teams having good stats against each other in the last 27 games, with 8 wins a piece and 11 draws it is hard to judge who could possibly have the edge. But with Spain’s recent wins over Italy last year and taking into account the recent records being broken by Spain I feel it’s an easy choice to hand over the baton to the Spanish for the win, putting them into the final against other tournament favorites Brazil which will promise to be a great spectacle.

Average Goals Per Game?

In the last 5 meetings 10 goals have been scored between the two sides, which gives us an average of 2 goals per game, 4 of them coming in the last game for the Spaniards.

Spain v Italy Recent Form

Spain: WWWWW
Italy: DDWWL

Both teams go head to head this Thursday with their eyes firmly on the prize, if Italy decide to turn up it could promise to be a close match against Spain but with recent injuries to Balotelli it puts pressure on the midfield and 2nd choice striker to step up to the plate. With Spain still playing strong I still feel it will be a low scoring game with Spain coming out victors after 90 minutes.

Both the Spanish strikers and midfield are finding the target on a regular basis and they could use this to exploit the Italians poor defense. I think come Sunday we will have an exciting final between hosts and Confederations Cup holders Brazil and World Cup and European Champions Spain.

Spain v Italy Match Betting Odds Market.

Spain will be clear favorites with the online bookmakers, which shouldn’t be surprising with their recent breaking of world records and their current run of form since the loss to England so long ago. The odds for a Spain win, as match winners with a best price current available of 4/11 with Skybet. Especially as Skybet are offering all new customers a free £10 bet with no deposit required!

Not the best from bookmakers for the Draw, with a best price of 4/1 with BetVictor which could prove to be a safe bet with 11 of the last 27 games between the two being draws.

Italy have odds with a lot of potential if they did manage to beat the Spanish. It could be well worth a bet as the odds will certainly attract some interest from punters at a best price of 15/2 with Skybet.

Spain v Italy Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

With everything taken into consideration, my own personal prediction would see Spain come out winners after a scrappy performance after 90 minutes. The score is a tough one but considering both teams form I can see Spain scoring at least 2 to 3 goals past Italy’s leaky defense. But I also feel the Italians have a goal in them even without the injured Balotelli.

So my prediction will be a Spain win with a 3-1 final score. With Torres doing well in the competition to date it could be worth having him with a first goal scorer and Spain win 3-1.
