Norway v Spain Preview, Women’s 2013 European Championship, Monday 22nd July 2013

Norway are on track to regain the title after losing it in the Semi-Finals 4 years ago with having won the competition before that in the 2003/05 campaign, and with beating current holders and world champions Germany 1 – 0 last game it would have filled coach Even Pellerud’s team with belief and a worlds good of confidence. The only thing to note is that they are not scoring as many as they are capable of with only 3 goals to record so far, don’t get me wrong the other end is obviously working being quiet tight with only letting 1 goal in so far and especially impressive against the Germans.

Spain finished the group well after beating England with a shock last minute injury time goal and deserved 2nd place in Group C behind France who have so far been the tournaments dominant team. With only losing to France by 1 goal it was worrying times for the Spanish coach going into the Russia game thinking they needed a win or draw to progress half expecting England to eventually turn it up and actually start playing, but that failed to happen as the French decided to embarrass them further dumping them to the bottom of the group with a lonely 1 point.

Norway v Spain Team News

Norway Team News:

Norway must be on cloud nine right now after beating the Germans in front of a sell-out crowd at the Kalmar stadium on Wednesday and they will need to dig deep here again to progress past Spain’s hopefuls. After topping the group in style they know it could of been a clean sweep yet they conceded an easy goal against Iceland in the opening game which ended 1 – 1. But With results against the Netherlands and Germany it allowed them to top Group B with an impressive 7 points. Goals may not be flowing with ease but it’s always the important ones ending the games 1 – 0 that seem to be Norway’s tactic right now as 3 different scorers have graced Norway’s board as of today.

Spain Team News:

So far the Spanish seem to be okay with goals being scored but also being let in by a leaky defense which must of performed well against France who seem to be scoring goals for fun right now, with that said goalscorers Veronica Bosquete, Alexia Putellas and Jennifer Hermoso seem to be flying the Spanish flag high with goals their fans can happily celebrate. Coach Ignacio Quereda is the competitions longest standing coach in women’s football and he will need his experience for this game as Norway are a tournament winning team which will require all of Spain’s talents to be on fine form come Monday.

Who Has The Advantage?

Norway have the clear advantage here but that’s not due to the above head to head statistics, that conclusion is purely put down to the current Norwegian form who although are not scoring many they are also keeping out goals with only conceding 1 goal in the competition so far.

Average Goals Per Game?

The 2 previous meetings have seen a total of 4 goals scored which provides us with an average goals per game statistic of 2 which indicates that we should see a goal or two grace the net.
