Italy v Denmark Preview, Women’s 2013 European Championship, Saturday 13th July 2013

After a surprise goalless draw in their opening match against Finland, the Italians will need to come out guns blazing if they are to progress through to the next stage. With Patrizia Panico leading Italy’s front line the Danes will be slightly worried as the goal scorer has put balls into their net on more than one occasion in past final tournaments.

Denmark were extremely lucky on Wednesdays opening night with keeper Stina Petersen saving twice in two penalty situations earning the Danes a draw, with taking the lead early on they pushed hard for a 2nd only to be stunned by a Swedish goal in the 35th minute.

With both teams able to score goals it will be down to the team who plays better on the night. Italy have met Denmark 15 times in the past, with the Danes winning 8 of them only to Italy’s 3 wins. But not until 1991 have the two met in a competitive match in the UEFA European Women’s Championships qualifier with Denmark winning 1-0 at home and drawing 1-1 away in Italy.

Italy v Denmark Team News

Italy Team News:

With this being Panico’s 5th EURO finals while having played in the 97′ 01′ 05′ and 09′ it will be expected that she is due to score a few goals, with 2005 the only finals she hasn’t scored in. But with this surely being the 38 year old’s last EURO finals I can see her wanting to go out with a bang. Having scored an impressive 9 goals during the qualifying stages she must certainly be due a few in the actual finals.

Sadly with the loss of Defender Elisabetta Tona who has been ruled out of the tournament having picked up a leg injury during training early during the week, which is a shame for Italy as she is a goal scorer from the back at set pieces.

Denmark Team News:

With Denmark’s penalty saving hero against Sweden already on the team sheet it would not come as a surprise that Stina Petersen will be full of confidence when it comes down to the potential face off with Panico. Another name down would be goal scorer Mariann Gajhede Knudsen who calmly started her account at the expense of Sweden, although with goal scorers Pernille Harder, Sanne Troelsgaard and Line Roddik hitting 8 goals each during qualifiers you could expect them to start.

Italy v Denmark Head to Head Statistics

11/12/2011 – FRLW Denmark – Italy 2 : 2
25/06/2001 – EURO Italy – Denmark 2 : 1
03/07/1997 – EURO Italy – Denmark 2 : 2
14/07/1991 – EURO Denmark – Italy 2 : 1

Who Has The Advantage?

In total Italy and Denmark have met each other on 15 previous occasion’s, with Denmark winning 8 of them and Italy only 3 and then the remaining 3 boring draws. With both teams recent form taken into account I would say Denmark have the advantage for this match having only lost 1 match in their last 6 games with the Italians losing 3 of their last 6 and then struggling for a win against Finland.

Average Goals Per Game?

Due to the lack of information available I have taken in the average goals scored purely in the previous meetings in the UEFA Women’s EURO Championships. Having played each other 5 times and 13 goals being scored it would give us an average of 2.6 goals per game.

Italy v Denmark Recent Form

Italy: L L W WD
Denmark:  LWWDD

Denmark head into the match with the better form as Italy struggled against the Finland ladies, but then things could of been different if it wasn’t for the Dane’s super penalty stopping hero who save twice on two separate occasions.

Italy v Denmark Match Betting Odds Market.

Denmark are the clear favorites to win this match with the online bookmakers which doesn’t surprise me after seeing Italy struggle against the hapless Finland, with the current best price of 11/10 with Ladbrokes – £30 Free Bets when Registering a New Account. which is very decent value to me and well worth taking as other bookies have nothing better with only SkyBet coming close.

Not bad odds for the Draw, with the best currently at a price of 5/2 with Bet365 – £200 Free Bets For New Customers Registering an Account. which for me would be huge value if Italy were to turn up and start playing to potential.

Italy do have a good chance to win this match if they decide to turn up and give the Danes a worthy game with good odds of  11/4 with Betfred (£50 Free Bets for New Customers).

Italy v Denmark Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

Taking everything into consideration I am going for a Denmark win here, they have a stronger side with many of them able to score and although I think they were lucky against Sweden on paper they should of won that match comfortably.
