Italy v Brazil Preview, Fifa Confederations Cup, Saturday 22nd June 2013

With both teams banging in the goals we can only hope to see the net bulge on more than one occasion on Saturday, but with Italy conceding far too easily in recent matches you would expect Brazil to have this one in the bag and the hosts will definitely be looking to do well in this competition as it will only aid in their confidence when it comes to hosting the World Cup next year.

This is certainly Brazil’s toughest game of the tournament so far and with under par performances against Chile and England which both ended in disappointing draws, they will have to be at their very best to defeat a hungry looking Italian side.

Italy will need to be a lot better at the back in this game as although the side is clearly on fire when it comes down to hitting the target having dispatched 4 past Japan in their last game, the leaky defense does continue to be a main problem for Claudio Prandelli’s side.

Italy showed great character coming back from 2-0 down early on in their previous match against Japan and that will have provided the whole squad with a confidence boost, and memories of those 2 poor friendly results against the Czech Republic and low standing Haiti of which they conceded two goals are now a distant memory.

Italy v Brazil Team News

Italy Team News:

De Rossi picked up a second booking in the game against Japan so will miss this game through suspension and with Alberto Aquilani only lasting 30mins in that game, it looks unlikely he will feature again either. Ignazio Abate could also be another playing missing from the starting eleven having had a very tough time against Japan at right back with Ignazio Abate the most likely to come in and replace him.

Likely Starting XI: (4-3-2-1) Buffon; Abate, Barzagli, Chiellini, De Sciglio; Marchisio, Pirlo, Montolivo; Giovinco, Giaccherini; Balotelli.

Brazil Team News:

David Luiz suffered a broken nose in the previous 2-0 victory over Mexico and looks likely to be rested for this one, which would mean Bayern Munich’s Dante coming in to replace him. The only other change that coach Felipe Scolari may make is Jo starting the game instead of Fred having impressed both games coming on as a substitute.

Likely Starting XI: (4-2-3-1) Julio Cesar; Alves, Thiago Silva, Dante, Filipe; Gustavo, Hernanes; Hulk, Oscar, Neymar; Jo.

Italy v Brazil Head to Head Statistics

Saturday night’s match action from Itaipava Arena Fonte Nova promises to wow the teams supporters and all neutrals as Italy look to get their first victory over Brazil in 30 years. They came close in March, which was the last time these two giants met when the game ended 2-2. But can Cesare Prandelli side finally get that awaited win? Here are 3 of Italy and Brazil’s recent head to head stats available.

  • Italy Wins: 0
  • Italy Goals Scored: 2
  • Italy Goals Conceded: 7
  • Draws: 1
  • Brazil Wins: 2
  • Brazil Goals Scored: 7
  • Brazil Goals Conceded: 2

Who Has The Advantage?

Brazil clearly have the advantage here, with Italy not able to defeat Brazil in over 30 years. But the last meeting between the two sides, it should show positives for Italy having earned a draw and putting two past the Brazilians. This could set the stage here for the Italians if their confidence is high.

With both teams winning their opening 2 games of the Confederations Cup it is Brazil’s results which show a more positive result having conceded zero goals and scoring a solid total of 5 to date. Then looking at Italy who have hit an impressive 6 goals in 2 games, but then also letting slip 4 goals which is unlike the ex World Cup winners.

Average Goals Per Game?

In the last 3 meetings 9 goals have been scored between the two sides, which gives us a high average of 3 goals per game, which suggests we should see a few goals rippling the nets on Saturday night!

Italy v Brazil Recent Form

Italy: WDDWW
Brazil: DDWWW

Both teams go head to head this Saturday after winning both their last two fixtures, but Brazil have the better stats having conceded no goals where as Italy have let in 4. Giving Brazil better odds of winning.

Italy v Brazil Match Betting Odds Market.

Brazil are the clear favorite with the online bookmakers, which shouldn’t come as much of a surprise what with being the hosts and current tournament holders and despite Italy’s recent victories it has not effected the odds on Brazil walking away with this as match as winners with a best price current on available of 8/11 with Betfred and there does look like maybe a few people playing safe bets on this one.

Good odds from all bookmakers for the Draw, with a best price of 11/4 with BetVictor which does seem value considering the last time these two sides met the match finished all square at 2-2.

Italy are certainly not without a chance of winning this game and are good odds from each of the online bookmakers and will certainly attract some interest from punters at a best price of 9/2 with SkyBet who currently offer all new customers £10 Free Bets No Deposit and with Italy facing a young side and a victory well over due having not beaten Brazil for 30 years the stage certainly looks set for a big Italian performance in this one.

Italy v Brazil Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

With the above comments taken into consideration, my own prediction would see Italy come out winners here with a 2-1 hard fought fight over the 90 minutes as 30 years with no win against the flamboyant Brazilians has got to come to an end at some point right?

The Brazil squad is currently full of youth and in-experience with many of the youngsters still learning their trade and I plan to put at least a small sized wager on the Italians getting the job done in this game and hopefully seeing a nice healthy return in the process! Balotelli has been on fire for club and country recently and I am also hoping to see a sneaky small bet come in with making him my first goalscorer of the night, combined with an Italy win which would see great odds of (to follow when available).
