Benfica v Tottenham Hotspur Preview, Europa League, Thursday 20th March 2014

Benfica are now twenty five games unbeaten and just showed the form they are in with an incredible 3 – 1 demolition of Tottenham Hotspurs in the first leg at White Hart Lane. Benfica were expecting a tougher game against the English side and were surprised to roll over their opponents with little trouble on the night. Since then the Portuguese Champions have continued their winning ways with a win over 5th placed Nacional in a six goal thriller.

Situations are going from bad to worse for new manager Tim Sherwood who now takes his Spurs side into this second leg on the back of three straight defeats. Worse of all they lost at home to bitter ancient rivals Arsenal although he could at least take some positives from the game with being the better side on the day. With an incredible goal separating the two London sides it was sadly the only goal of the match even though it was still an exciting game.

Benfica Team News:

Benfica’s Brazilian defender Luisao should be set for another start at home against Spurs on Thursday after he grabbed a brace in the game at White Hart Lane. Spanish striker Rodrigo scored the other and is now the clubs top scorer by one goal. Manchester United target Ezequiel Garay is also another name that should be playing and is in great form right now after scoring twice in their last game.

Tottenham Hotspur Team News:

Tim Sherwood could see the return of Belgium star Moussa Dembele after a hamstring issue although will still sadly be missing Capoue (Ankle) and Erik Lamela (Back). Tottenham Hotspurs are also without defenders Chiriches (Back) and Michael Dawson due to a hamstring issue.

Benfica v Tottenham Hotspur Head to Head Statistics

With just two games played we now see both clubs have a win each. But it will be Benfica with the better advantage as their win came away from home in the Europa League and has now left the English club a mountain to climb if they themselves wish to qualify.

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

With only 2 games in total played we can count there has been 5 goals scored. Which gives us an average of 2.5 goals per game. We could well see this average come into play on Thursday as Spurs will need to go full out and attack if they wish to qualify, but this could in turn allow Benfica to casually attack Tottenham Hotspurs on the counter potentially leaving Tim Sherwood’s men a bigger task to fulfill.

Benfica v Tottenham Hotspur Recent Form (Left to Right)

Benfica: W W W W W

Tottenham Hotspur: L L L W W

Tottenham Hotspurs head into this game on the back of three defeats which leaves them lacking any good form to go on as their two previous wins came to sides such as Cardiff City and Dnipro which were expected. Benfica however are now 25 games unbeaten with 23 of these games being wins.

Benfica v Tottenham Hotspur Match Betting Odds Market

Benfica are as expected the clear favourites for the win on Thursday will also having the better aggregate so far. With the bookmakers setting the best odds currently found here @ 4/6 with Bet365 – £200 Free Bets For New Customers Registering an Account.

The Draw is seen as a good option here by bookmakers even though I personally feel Tottenham will be trying hard to not achieve it. The best odds currently from bookmakers can be seen here @ 3/1 with Betfred Mobile – Free £10 + £25 Matches Bet For New Customers

Tottenham Hotspur do have a serious mountain to climb here but either way must go all out and try to win the game 3 – 0 on the night. A result alone which is seen showing silly odds. The best odds coming in for Spurs to win however can be found here @ 5/1 with Bet365 – £200 Free Bets For New Customers Registering an Account.

Benfica v Tottenham Hotspur Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

Thursday Nights Europa League action looks set to provide quite a game here in Portugal with Tottenham Hotspurs having a near impossible task in front of them. They need to win by three goals on the night to secure a place into the next round but with Benfica not losing a game in twenty five matches can you see them losing this one?

Benfica I can see approaching this game much like the first, they will be looking to grab an early goal to kill off Tottenham Hotspurs hopes of a come back. Spurs will need to be careful attacking the Portuguese Champions as they are very dangerous on the counter attack, a tactic which will be in full force on Thursday when Tim Sherwood’s men will be forced to go out and search for three goals.

My predictions for last game were slightly off, I would of thought Sherwood’s side would of come out fighting after their disappointing heavy defeat to Chelsea the game before. Even though the London club did lose at the weekend to derby rivals Arsenal they were still the better side over the 90 minutes but found it hard to crack open a severe chance in Arsenals defence. So I am going for a Benfica win on Thursday and to have a 2 goal margin which could prove to be worth while. The other result I am going for is a score draw as both sides could possibly cancel each other out on the night.
