England v Spain Preview, Women’s 2013 European Championship, Friday 12th July 2013

England are playing great football at the moment and head into this game having lost just once in their last twelve matches which came last time out in a friendly against Sweden 4-1, that defeat will have definitely hurt the pride and confidence of these English women, but hopefully not enough to effect their performances for their opening game against Spain on Friday night.

Spain have also been in pretty decent form of late and have lost just twice in an incredible twenty matches of which they completely destroyed Kazakhstan 13-0 and Turkey 1-10, so despite not really being fancied as a front runner to win this tournament, England will have to be at their very best to take all 3pts in my opinion as this Spanish side is very capable of winning this tournament.

England v Spain Team News

England Team News:

Striker Kelly Smith is recovering from a shin injury so is unlikely to start this game, although she might be used from the bench if required. In her place Eniola Aluko will start up front and being just 26 years old and the current top goalscorer for her domestic club Chelsea Ladies, Coach Hope Powell does have a decent replacement and as long as there is plenty of support for Eniola Aluko she can certainly cause the Spanish defence some serious problems.

Spain Team News:

Coach Ignacio Quereda has a very young and in-experienced squad to worth with for this tournament, but his side have already proved during the group stage qualification that they can mix it up with the very best when required and with a style of play that is very similar to the men’s national side they will certainly feel confident of getting something out of this one. Whether or not they do will rely mainly on how Vero Boquete, Jenni Hermoso and Adriana Martin perform as these three ladies are certainly the backbone of the squad and ones that make things happen.

England v Spain Head to Head Statistics

Who Has The Advantage?

The two nations have played each other on 4 previous occassions that we have been able to find results for and as we see from the head to head statistics table shown above it is England who have a clear advantage, having won 2, drawn 2 and losing 0.

Average Goals Per Game?

The 4 previous meetings have seen a total of 10 goals scored which provides us with an average goals per game statistic of 2.50 which indicates that we should see one or two goals scored during this one.

England v Spain Recent Form

England: W W W D L
Spain: D WW D D

England have a slight advantage on the recent form statistics which shows them having won three of theirlast five games, compared to Spain who have managed just two wins from their last five, although Spain have remained unbeaten during this period with England having lost once.

England v Spain Match Betting Odds Market.

England are the clear favourites with the online bookmakers to win this game at a current best price of 23/20 with Coral (£50 Free Bets for New Customers) available, which doesn’t look a bad price considering how close the side went in Euro 2009.

The Draw has been a regular result when these two nation’s have met in the past and with neither team wanting to start their campaign with a loss another one could very well be a clever play and this can be backed at a very tempting price of 5/2 with BetVictor (£25 Free Bets for New Customers).

Spain are certainly not without a chance of winning this game and their current best price of 12/5 with Sky Bet (£10 Free Bets No Deposit Required for New Customers) does look pretty decent value considering they have only lost twice in their last twenty matches played.

England v Spain Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

For me this is a game that on the day, really could go either way as with England missing the services up front of a certain Kelly Smith who scares the life out of any defence their attacking options are not as strong as they could be and this will only provide the Spanish squad with confidence as with their excellent record of having lost just twice in their last twenty games, they can certainly play football.

However, Spain have not had much experience in big tournaments such as this and with the squad full of young and in-experienced players the pressure might just be too much for them to deal with, especially if England were to score an early goal and considering England’s recent record during the big tournament’s they do look to have the more chance of winning this game.
