Sunderland v West Ham United Preview, Premiership, Monday 31st March 2014

Its going to be do or die for Sunderland in this Monday nights football match, with them now four points adrift West Brom who are themselves only just outside the bottom three. Sunderland do still have a couple of games in hand after they play on Monday and winning both could see them pull out of the relegation zone in dramatic fashion. Their last win in the Premiership was back at the beginning of February with an incredible win over local rivals Newcastle United.

West Ham United need a few more points to be considered safe from the drop even though Cardiff City are only just eight points behind and occupy that eighteenth position. A win at Sunderland will ease off the pressure that is soon to follow as they play host to Liverpool and then travel to Arsenal. From then on after they will need to win against Crystal Palace and West Brom to allow complete safety as their last two games of the season are at home to Tottenham Hotspurs then away to favourites Manchester City.

Sunderland Team News:

Sunderland have just a couple of absents with the first being Scottish striker Steven Fletcher who is missing with an ankle injury. The next is Keiran Westwood who was injured a while back with a shoulder issue. Goalkeeper Vito Mannone has played very well considering their relegation woes. One thing Sunderland have had issues with is strikers hitting the net, with the clubs top scorer being Adam Johnson (7) from the right wing.

West Ham United Team News:

West Ham are without a trio of players with the first being defender John Collins who is sidelined with a calf injury. The next is Borriello who is also suffering with a calf issue. Last but not least is O’Brien who has a dislocated shoulder. Like Sunderland, their opponents West Ham are also suffering with a lack of goals and the clubs top scorer is also a midfielder, being Kevin Nolan on seven goals.

Sunderland v West Ham United Head to Head Statistics:

In their last 5 head to head encounters we can see it is Sunderland who are the better side with 3 wins and 2 draws. But looking at the 68 games played in total we can see Sunderland just win the stats race with 26 wins to West Ham’s 24. Also we have 18 draws in total with 6 at the Sunderland’s stadium.

Sunderland v West Ham United Recent Form (Left to Right)

Sunderland: L L D L L

West Ham United: W L L L W

West Ham United are the team in better form here with two wins in their last five games, where as Sunderland’s last win came in the FA Cup at home to Southampton last month. Since then they have suffered five loses and a goalless draw at home to Crystal Palace.

Sunderland v West Ham United Match Betting Odds Market

Sunderland are slight favourites to win this match even though their last Premiership victory was back in early February. The bookmakers have set the best odds up currently seen here @ 13/10 with Ladbrokes – £50 Free Bets when Registering a New Account..

The Draw is a good option I feel with both sides lacking a prolific goalscorer. I still feel both teams will score but the draw is of course a great option. Bookmakers best odds are currently set @ 12/5 with Betfred (£25 Free Bets for New Customers)

West Ham United are only just behind Sunderland in regards to being the favourites to win the match, and the best odds set by bookmakers can be seen here @ 13/5 with Bet365 (£200 Matched Bonus Bets for New Customers)

Sunderland v West Ham United Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

Although Monday night isn’t offering any top of the league dramatic action we are still able to take in the excitement of what is happening at the bottom of the table. Granted West Ham United look likely to be safe from the drop this year round but are only just eight points off that drop zone. Sunderland have a couple of games in hand and if won could seriously worry other clubs chasing safety.

Sunderland’s form can only be described as terrible, they haven’t won a Premiership game since back in February where they demolished local and bitter rivals Newcastle United in a 3 – 0 thriller. Do I see them grabbing a victory in this game? Who knows as it must be on the cards if they do wish to avoid playing in the Championships next year. West Ham know a win here at The Stadium of Light could mean safety from the drop, although that is not set in stone the chances of a relegation placed side earning elven points in their remaining games looks unlikely.

My predictions for this game does favour West Ham with a win but how they win I guess is the question. I do see both teams scoring but with that prediction I plan to take a score draw. I haven’t predicted a correct score in some time so plan to attempt that with a 2 – 1 win by West Ham United.
