Southampton v Norwich City Preview, Premiership, Sunday 30th August 2015.

This season we have seen a very different Southampton side, especially as the bigging of last season the club enjoyed being in the top five for a majority of the first half. This start however has been very different with just two points from nine and sitting in eighteenth. Don’t get me wrong I do feel they will improve and certainly be around mid table come the end of this campaign, so no relegation woes which will be a great relief to a club who have sold a majority of their big stars in the last two years. Southampton didn’t enjoy their first taste of European football either, having drawn at home in the first leg and then to lose 1 – 0 in the second leg away from home. They were also the favourites to progress pass the Danish side yet came up short and now are out of the competition. The club will want to earn their first win of the season on Sunday which will give them a much needed boost to then face West Bromwich Albion away from home. As they then have to welcome Manchester United to St Mary’s and we can imagine how tough this game will be if they head into it without a win of some sort.

Norwich City have enjoyed a great start to their Premiership campaign after being promoted via the play-offs last season. Granted they did lose the first game which was at home against Crystal Palace 3 – 1, but soon bounced back on their travels against Sunderland with a 3 – 1 win this time. The club then drew against tough side Stoke City and now currently sit in a healthy eight position in the league. Capital One Cup action was next and a win away from home against Rotherham United sees them into the third round draw to now face West Bromwich Albion at home. Norwich City will fancy their chances against Southampton on Sunday, especially with their opponents suffering with poor form at the start of the season. They then have to face fellow newcomers Bournemouth who have also done well and frustrated opponents since their title win last campaign. Liverpool away from home will be next and will certainly see them as favourites, although confidence can be had with a couple of wins before that date.

Southampton Team News:

We see plenty of injury woes for Southampton at the start of this campaign. Victor Wanyama has been the subject of transfer gossip in recent weeks, and is currently ill so wont likely feature. Ramirez (knock) misses out while new signing Jordy Clasie (hamstring) also misses another week. Ryan Bertrand still has a knee injury and joins Gardos (knee) and long term injured Ben Foster (knee) to watch the game sitting with the crowd.

Norwich City Team News:

Kyle Lafferty is currently injured with his knee the culprit, while Youssouf Mulumbu sits out long term with metatarsal fracture damage. Martin Olsson is the last of the injured and currently misses Sunday due to his shoulder.

Southampton v Norwich City Head to Head Statistics:

In the last five head to head encounters Southampton come out just on top with two wins, a loss and two draws. The last time Norwich City beat Southampton at the St Mary’s stadium was way back in 2008 when the two were strutting about in the English Championship. In total we have 51 meetings between the two clubs in which Southampton come out on top with 19 victories. That said Norwich City are not too far behind with 17 wins. Meaning the remaining 15 games have ended up as draws, two of which have been seen in the last five meetings.

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

In the 51 games played we have seen a total of 140 goals scored, this is going to give us an average of just over 2.7 goals per game which when looking at the above fixtures can be either hit or miss. However with the way the two have started the below option could be a solid choice for Sundays fixture, and will certainly something I consider when placing a bet.

In the last five games we can see it is away side Norwich City who are in the better form with three wins to their name. Southampton have yet to win a game this season in the league, with their only wins coming back in late July and early August in the qualifiers of the Europa League, in which they have now been knocked out of.

Southampton v Norwich City Match Betting Odds Market

Southampton are the favourites for the win on Sunday with it being the more dominant potential result. However their form is very poor and they could seriously walk away once again without three points. The best odds on them actually winning the game can be seen by a number of leading bookmakers, with the best currently seen here @ 21/20 with Ladbrokes – £25 Free Bets when Registering a New Account.

The Draw has been seen twice in the last five meetings, making a total of fifteen in the fifty one games played between the two. Southampton v Norwich City Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

Super Sunday Premier League action tomorrow can be seen live on Sky Sports 1 High Definition with a lunchtime kick off at St Mary’s. Southampton welcome Norwich City and will be in search of their first league win of the season, knowing it will be tough from the off as Norwich City will no doubt be confident due to their own good start. Southampton will of had a knock in confidence midweek after being knocked out of the Europa League qualifiers to Danish side Midtjylland 2 – 1 on aggregate. Southampton were the bookmakers favourites to progress to the group stages yet failed to make any impact both home and away.

Norwich City may of started with a loss to Crystal Palace, but have since then bounced back with a win over Sunderland away from home and also drawn against tough side Stoke City. They will certainly fancy their chances of beating this out of form Southampton side, something that hasn’t been seen at St Mary’s since way back in 2008 in the Championships. A win on Sunday and against their next opponents Bournemouth at home will leave them in high spirits before facing Liverpool at Anfield in a couple of weeks. Southampton however will soon face Manchester United, and in bad form could see themselves embarrassed unless things improve.

My predictions for Sundays game does strongly lean towards a draw, and I feel going for both teams to score could also be a good solid bet. The next I am torn, in one hand I want to go for a home win of some sort, something Southampton are in serious need of. The other I can also see Norwich City pulling off a good winning result, something to compliment their good start to life in the Premiership. So instead of the confusion and headache of picking who could win I am going to go for a bet aimed at goals potentially scored. So for that I feel between two and three goals being scored on the day.
