Chelsea v Atletico Madrid Preview, Champions League, Wednesday 30th April 2014

Chelsea managed to secure a 0-0 draw in the first leg of this Semi Final match over at the Estadio Vicente Calderon last week and that now puts them in complete control of this game on wednesday night in front of their own fans at Stamford Bridge and with manager Jose Mourinho having achieved the impossible over the weekend in the English Premiership by beating league leaders Liverpool, the fans and players will no doubt be confident of getting their club the right result and progressing through to an impressive third final in the last six years.

Atletico Madrid would have been extremely frustrated on how things went last week and although they did manage to create a few chances on the Chelsea goal, it didn’t honestly look like they were going to score against the well organised defence that Chelsea had and with this game on wednesday night looking likely to be very another very tight game with Chelsea doing much of the defending the only way we look like getting an exciting game is if Atletico Madrid were to grab an early goal as Chelsea would then have no option but to attack.

Chelsea Team News:

The hosts will be without goal keeper Petr Chech who is now out for the rest of the season with an injury picked up in the first leg match last week over in Spain. John Terry could return though having missed the weekend victory over Liverpool and also returning to the squad will be Eden Hazard and David Luiz but both Frank Lampard and Mikel are suspended for this game and will play no part.

Demba Ba done exactly what his manager asked for in the 1-0 victory against Liverpool on sunday and it would not surprise me in the least to see Jose Mourinho stick with Ba as his main attacker for this game.

Atletico Madrid Team News:

No fresh injury problems for the visitors, so expect to see a very similar lineup to the one seen last week in the first leg match at the Estadio Vicente Calderon. Diego Costa will again lead the attack up front and could be joined by David Villa in an attempt to snatch an early goal and force Chelsea to attack.

Chelsea v Atletico Madrid Head to Head Statistics

Wednesday night’s game from Stamford Bridge will become only the 5th meeting between these two clubs over the years. Both clubs have recored one win each with the other two remaining games having finished all square and as we can see from the data below in our head to head statistics table, there really is nothing to seperate the two clubs.

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

13 Goals have been scored in the previous 4 matches played between the two clubs over the years which provides us with an average goals per game statistic of 3.25, however with Jose Mourinho expected to play a very similar formation to the one that secured that 0-0 draw last week over in the Estadio Vicente Calderon, I would not expect this game to see much in the way of goals scored on wednesday night.

Chelsea v Atletico Madrid Recent Form (Left to Right)

Chelsea: W W L D W

Atletico Madrid: W W W D W

Chelsea have turned their form around in the last seven days and have now only lost once during their previous 5 matches and having beaten Liverpool over the weekend at Anfield Stadium, they will certainly be confident of winning this game now that they have home advantage.

Atletico Madrid still have a slight advantage on the recent form statistics though having managed to remain unbeaten during their previous 5 matches of which they have won 4 and drawn 1.

Chelsea v Atletico Madrid Match Betting Odds Market

Chelsea have managed to pull off two excellent results during the last seven days and with their victory against Liverpool at the weekend at Anfield Stadium many people will be expecting the to win this game and the online bookmakers seem to agree having Jose Mourinho’s side the clear favourites at a best price of 13/10 with Paddy Power (£50 Free Bets for New Customers).

The Draw is an obvious outcome after what we saw last week over at the Estadio Vicente Calderon and this will probably see plenty of support from punters at a current best price of 23/10 with Bet365 (£200 Matched Bonus Bets for New Customers).

Atletico Madrid for me do have the better squad of players and they will certainly not of been happy with their result last week in the first leg. If manager Diego Simeone plays both David Villa and Diego Costa up front for this game I can see them winning and their current best price of 13/5 with BetVictor (£25 Free Bets for New Customers) does look value in my opinion.

Chelsea v Atletico Madrid Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

Chelsea certainly sit in pole position for this crucial second leg on wednesday night at Stamford Bridge as with a packed out stadium of fans fully behind them the players will have plenty of support and having beaten Liverpool over the weekend 1-0 at Anfield, the confidence at the club is obviously sky high at the moment.

However, Atletico Madrid do only need 1 goal to turn this tie in their favour as that would mean Chelsea would need to score at least twice and with the way Jose Mourinho has had them setup in the previous two games they would be forced to move the parked bus from the field and go on the attack.

The average goal statistics suggest this game to see at least 3 goals scored, but the only chance of this happening in my opinion is if Atletico Madrid did manage to score an early goal, otherwise I would expect this game to either finish 0-0 like it did last week in the first leg or one of the two sides to snatch a 1-0 victory.

You can’t help but be impressed by the tactics deployed by Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho over the last week, but I still think Atletico Madrid are playing the better football of the two sides this season and I can certainly see them causing a huge upset on wednesday night by winning this game.

So on to some predictions and my Banker for this game is going to be Atletico Madrid to win on the Asian Handicap, as I don’t think they will lose this game during the 90mins.

My Saver for this game is going to be this game to see a Penalty awarded by referee Nicola Rizzoli as he has a tendancy to be quick to hand out yellow cards and with the pressure on both defences, we could see someone make a mistake and a penalty given.
