Chelsea v Liverpool Preview, Premiership, Sunday 29th December 2013

Chelsea will be heading into this match with a look at attempted to end the year 1 point clear of Liverpool who were sitting top of the Premiership on Christmas Day. Although they are now in 4th with other results played out on Boxing Day, it will be unlikely that Chelsea will finish the year top of the league with Manchester City facing Crystal Palace at home on Saturday, if City do win which is expected, then they will take the top spot if current leaders Arsenal fail to pick up maximum 3 points away from home to in form Newcastle United. Jose Mourinho however will be solely focused on picking up 3 points himself rather than worrying about other results and only a win will do here if Chelsea do intend on a serious title winning push.

Brenden Rodgers was very disappointed after the Boxing Day defeat to Manchester City, and has been questioned by the FA on remarks make about the officials. Liverpool played exceptionally well against Manchester City and didn’t deserve to lose the game and discussion comes once more in regards to officials doing a good enough job. This will however be an incredible game to watch as a neutral and I honestly do not see Liverpool losing this game if they do play like they did against 2nd place City. If they do continue to play as they are then this will be the first serious title push Liverpool have made in 24 years so will be desperate to win this game against tough opponents Chelsea.

Chelsea Team News:

Chelsea will most likely be starting Frank Lampard against Liverpool as Brazilian Ramires missing the match due to a one match ban after he picked up his 5th yellow card of the season against Swansea City. Good news however for Chelsea who see defenders Gary Cahill and Cesar Azpilicueta return from injury and no doubt out of favor Ashley Cole and David Luiz will be relegated back to warming the bench. We could also see ex Liverpool striker Fernando Torres start ahead of Eto’o and co.

Liverpool Team News:

Liverpool are still without Daniel Sturridge with a bad ankle and Jose Enrique and fellow defender Sebastian Coates who are both out with knee injuries. Club Captain Steven Gerrard is still out but making good progress with his hamstring injury and we also see local lad Jon Flanagan nursing the same injury and although he missed the game against Manchester City on Boxing Day he could be seen to return in time against Chelsea on Sunday.

Chelsea v Liverpool Head to Head Statistics:

As we can see in the last 5 head to head statistics it is slightly just in Liverpool’s favor, but I guess the main statistics we are looking for comes from the 156 games recently played which still lays in Liverpool’s favor with 69 wins to Chelsea’s 52. Away from home however we have seen Liverpool come away with 3 points 21 times so we know they could quite easily achieve that once again come Sunday.

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

In the 156 games played over the years we have seen a total of 450 goals scored which gives us an average of 2.9 goals per game. So hopefully come Sunday we will see a few goals grace the net.

Chelsea v Liverpool Recent Form (Left to Right)

Chelsea: W D L W W

Liverpool: L W W W W

It the last five games we see Liverpool are the team in better form here having won 4 from their last 5 games against Chelsea’s 3 wins and 1 draw. With Liverpool being top of the league at Christmas it will now be Chelsea’s chance to change the 2 point difference this two clubs currently have.

Chelsea v Liverpool Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

This is a very tough game to predict with both teams currently in the top four of the Premiership title race. We have Chelsea who have done well in the league since their shock loss to Stoke City at the beginning of December. The day before Christmas Eve see Jose Mourinho’s side visit The Emirates and came away with a point as the game ended goalless, any other year that could be considered a bad result for Chelsea but with Arsenal sitting top of the league right now you would have to say it was a better result than what could of been expected.

Depending on results on Saturday with Manchester City facing Crystal Palace and then with Arsenal facing Newcastle United on Sunday, we could potentially be seeing Chelsea sitting top. But if we are realistic it will be a win for Manchester City and then Arsenal verses Newcastle could be anything. So if Chelsea do win then I would think a respectable 2nd in the league with the year ended should be considered a good year.

Liverpool winning on Sunday would also see them sitting 2nd in the league if Arsenal fail to grab any points Sunday lunchtime and then also Manchester City winning as expected, a position Liverpool fans will be ecstatic with as their team are in with a serious push for the title, something not seen in the last 24 years. So here we come to my predictions, Liverpool’s last game against Manchester City I did manage to get one of them correct. So will once again place my faith in something similar for Sundays clash. The first is for both teams to score and the game end as a draw and the other is for Suarez to score and Liverpool to win the game.
