FC Porto v Chelsea Preview, Champions League, Tuesday 29th September 2015.

I can imagine Portuguese side FC Porto will fancy their chances against their old manager Jose Mourinho, especially with the extremely poor form his side Chelsea are in currently. Their opposite may of beaten Arsenal previously and also their opening Champions League game against Maccabi Tel-Aviv. But Porto will be a completely different challenge and with them also having the home advantage come Tuesday. Porto are currently top of the Primeira Liga table even though it is only on goal difference currently, and should of done far better at the weekend when they drew away from home to Moreirense 2 – 2.

We started to think Chelsea had now got over their very poor start to the season with them having won three games on the trot recently. Granted the only opposite who were tough was Arsene Wenger’s side Arsenal. The game did end 2 – 0 in the home sides favour, although once again we see a game full of controversy with two Arsenal players being sent off and also no booking for Diego Costa who should of seen a straight red card come his way. He has now been banned by the FA with them having viewed the footage and felt the striker warranted a suspension. Newcastle United pushed Chelsea to the limit at the weekend having went 2 – 0 up, but somehow the visitors pulled back the two goal deficit in the last ten minutes of the match.

FC Porto Team News:

Midfielder Yacine Brahimi injured his right knee against Moreirense in Friday fixture, but is in the squad to face Chelsea on Tuesday. Fellow midfielders Hector Herrera and Silvestre Varela however have been left out.

Chelsea Team News:

Chelsea have no new names added to their current injury list as number one goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois continues his rehab with a bad knee injury. Diego Costa could play on Tuesday as his ban is for the domestic games only, and wont return for the club in the league until after the match against Southampton.

FC Porto v Chelsea Head to Head Statistics:

In total these two clubs have played each other on six occasions with Chelsea as the better side with four wins altogether. Porto have won the once which was way back in 2004 in the Champions League with the other remaining result ending in a 1 – 1 draw in Portugal three years later.

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

In the six games played we have seen a total of 14 goals scored, which is going to give us a rough average of 2.3 goals scored per game. In the last two games played we haven’t seen a lot of goals which would of bought the average down slightly over the years. I however will go for the below selection for this game come Tuesday.

In the last five games played in all competition both sides have been in good form, although if we were looking at the whole season FC Porto would be considered as the better. Home side FC Porto are just out in front in regards to who are the bookmakers favourites to win the game.

FC Porto v Chelsea Match Predictions, Banker Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets

Champions League action this Tuesday will be shown live on BT Sports Europe and features home side FC Porto against English Champions Chelsea in what should be a very interesting tie. Jose Mourinho has won the competition when managing Porto way back in the early 2000’s and would also love to win it with Chelsea who have only won it under Di Matteo back in 2012. The club also won the Europa League and FA Cup in the following season but under Rafael Benitez who took over.

Chelsea may of won three games on the trot recently, but soon come up stuck against Newcastle United away from home last weekend. They trailed by two goals until eleven minutes from time and somehow managed to pull both goals back to earn a valuable draw. The club are way down the bottom half of the Premier League table and currently sit in a dismal fifteenth position, which proves its been an extremely poor start to last years champions.

My predictions for this game does tend to favour the draw, although I do feel either side could steal a win with only moments remaining in the match. So for the first I am planning to go for both teams to score and for the game to end as a draw. With the next being that of Porto to grab the win with Chelsea failing to score a goal on the night. Meaning Porto win to nil.
