Manchester United v Arsenal Preview, Premiership, Sunday 28th February 2016.

With the media so unpredictable in regards to Manchester United you can’t help but feel sorry for Louis van Gaal who is constantly having to justify himself and his job security. I know their last two opponents haven’t been the strongest of teams United have faced this season it was nice to see them return to playing what we come to expect from the Alex Ferguson era.

Manchester United now find themselves at home against West Ham United in the quarter finals of the FA Cup which is due to be played mid March and on top of that success they are also through into the next round of the Europa League competition and face bitter rivals Liverpool over two legs. This fixture against Arsenal will certainly be a test for LVG who must go for the win if they have any hopes of coming in the top four.

Unlike Manchester United who were knocked out of the Champions League in the group stages, we see Arsenal come into this game on the back of a home defeat against the unbeatable giants of Spain, Barcelona. Arsene Wenger and his side have a very tough game in the away leg of the competition and are seen as unlikely to progress into the next round of the Champions League.

As for the Premier League we do see Arsenal still on track in regards to a chance to win the title and even though they are in third they are still just two points adrift of Leicester City who currently lead the pack. The next five games do have some tough opponents although I would say they should win against this injury ridden Manchester United side. Swansea City should be three points and then it’s an away tie to bitter rivals Spurs.

Manchester United Team News:

With Anthony Martial doing the sensible thing and pull out of the midweek Europa League game against FC Midtylland he has also become a doubt for this game against Arsenal with a tight hamstring. Good news for United fans though is that David de Gea should be back and starting.

United are still waiting to hear if youngster Borthwick-Jackson and Chris Smalling are fit to play and if they do it will be a huge boost for this injury struck United side. Valencia, Januzaj and Darmian all returned to training this week although will need to get some match fitness before being available for selection.

Arsenal Team News:

Arsenal have also had their own fair share of injuries yet have coped far better than Sundays opponents Manchester United. Arsenal now know that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is unavailable having suffered a knee injury and will likely be out for another two weeks.

Jack Wilshere is close to a return from his leg injury while Cazorla and Rosicky are still out. Arsene Wenger is still waiting on defender Gabriel who needs to do a fitness test.

Manchester United v Arsenal Head to Head Statistics:

Manchester United always seem to struggle against this Arsenal side with their last home win against them being back during the 2013 season which ended 1 – 0. The last time they played at Old Trafford was in the FA Cup last season, in which they lost 2 – 1 with ex United player Danny Welbeck grabbing the winner. In total the two have played 181 times in which Manchester United have won 77 and lost 62, leaving the remaining 42 games ending as draws.

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

In the 181 games played out against each other we have seen a total of 512 goals scored. This is going to give us a goals per game average of 2.8 which has been seen in roughly four of the last five fixtures played. So I feel going for the below selection on Sunday could be a solid option.

Arsenal: L D W W D

Manchester United are lingering in 5th position right now and haven’t been the United of old for a number of seasons since Sir Alex Ferguson retired. Arsenal however are having a good season and are currently in 3rd just two points off the top and serious challengers for the title come the end of the season.

Manchester United v Arsenal Match Predictions, Banker Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets

Premier League action this Sunday can be seen live on Sky Sports 1 and of course viewed in spectacular high definition. The game is also set at the beautiful ground of Old Trafford where Manchester United welcome title chasing Arsenal to come do battle. United may of won their last two games and taken a lot of confidence from it, yet the opponents played are not of the same caliber as a side such as Arsenal.

Louis van Gaal is still under immense pressure with constant reports that he is to be replaced by Jose Mourinho in the summer which is expected from the British media who often just write their own news to sell papers. United do have some terrible injury issues right now which has invited many of the clubs youth players to come make a name for themselves. Which I must add they certainly have taken their chances.

Arsenal come into this game on the back of a home defeat, having played Champions League football midweek against the Spanish giants Barcelona. The game ended 2 – 0 to the Spaniards and Arsenal now face an almost impossible challenge of going through and beating Barcelona on their home turf next month.

Losing to Manchester United on Sunday will dampen Arsenal’s chances of the title as Leicester City and Tottenham Hotspur both have easy games against relegation battling sides, and could improve the gap once again. After the United game we do see Arsenal also travel away from home to bitter rivals Spurs, which could also end badly for Arsene Wenger who will certainly not want to finish behind Spurs come the end of the season.

My predictions for this game first will back both teams to score and draw. I personally think that is a sensible option as a banker bet as even though Arsenal are the favourites the game could of course still go either way. The next prediction I am going for is Arsenal to take the 1 – 0 win on the day, and continue to apply the pressure on Leicester City who are likely to be winners on Saturday against strugglers Norwich City.
