Italy v Spain Preview, Euro 2016 Finals, Last 16, Monday 27th June 2016

Italy came through to the last 16 of this tournament as group winners having managed two wins and one defeat from their three matches played, the defeat they suffered in the final group match against the Republic of Ireland was mainly down to the manager having rested a large number of his star players and I would expect to see them all back involved for this showdown against Spain on Monday evening.

Spain reached this last 16 round having came through their group as runners up behind Croatia who we saw Portugal beat on Saturday night during extra time. Spain won two and lost one of their three matches played and don’t look quite the powerhouse team that we have been used to seeing in previous years and it will be interesting to see how they cope with this well organised Italy team.

Italy Team News:

Italy have no reported injuries or suspensions to their squad so I would expect their manager to play his strongest lineup available for this game which will include the recall of Gianluigi Buffon, Giorgio Chiellini, Emanuele Giaccherini, Graziano Pelle, Daniele De Rossi and Andrea Barzagli, who were all rested in that 1-0 defeat against the Republic of Ireland last time out.

Spain Team News:

Spain also have no reported injuries or suspensions and I would expect their manager to start with the same starting eleven that he has done in their opening three matches of the tournament, which will see Juventus star striker Alvaro Morata leading the attack up front.

Italy v Spain Head to Head Statistics:

Monday evening’s last 16 match from the Stade de France in Saint-Denis will become the 35th meeting between the two nations over recent years and as we can see from our head to head statistics table below, it has been Spain who have enjoyed the better of the results having won three times, compared to Italy having failed to win any, with the remaining two matches having finished all square.

24/03/16 FRI Italy – Spain 1 : 1
05/03/14 FRI Spain – Italy 1 : 0
27/06/13 COC Spain – Italy 0 : 0 (P)

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

76 Goals have been scored during those previous 34 matches played between the two nations and this generates us an average goals per game statistic of 2.24 which suggests we should see at least one or two goals scored in this one on Monday evening.

Italy v Spain Recent Form (Left to Right)

Italy: W W W W L

Spain: W L W W L

Italy just edge the recent form statistics having managed four wins and one defeat during their previous five matches played, compared to Spain who have won three and lost two of their previous five matches played.

Very little between the two countries on the recent form statistics and with both having similar records at the tournament so far, there is every possibility that this game could see extra time and even penalties.

Italy v Spain Match Betting Odds Market

Italy have definitely been one of the better sides during this tournament and I expect them to go very close to securing a place in the quarter finals and their current best price available of 7/2 with Ladbrokes – Receive £50 Free Bets for New Customers Registering an Account does look great value in my opinion.

The Draw is a current best price of 2/1 with Bet365 – Receive £200 Matched Bonus Bets for New Customers Registering an Account and is also a very likely outcome given that there really is nothing between the two countries based on what we have seen so far in this tournament.

Spain are the clear favourites to win this match, which won’t come as much of a surprise to many people, however their current odds on offer of 6/5 with Coral – Bet £5 & Receive £20 Free Bets for New Customers Registering an Account, do look a bit on the short side considering they were beaten 2-1 by Croatia who have now been eliminated from the tournament.

Italy v Spain Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

I expect most people will probably see this game as being a very close affair as both countries have won two and lost one of their three matches played in the group stage.

However, I think we can forgive Italy their defeat as their manager did decide to rest a large number of his key players for that game, where as Spain were soundly beaten with a strong side.

From what I have seen during the group stage, Italy seem to have just the edge in this game and if they play anything like they did in their opening two games of the group, where they looked very good indeed, I do think they can cause a bit of a shock on Monday night and send Spain home.

However, we have not seen the best of Spain yet by any means and with the way they pass the ball around and the abundance of world class talent they have available in their squad, I do expect Spain to score in this one, so the sensible option might be to get on this game going into extra time and even penalties.

Onto some predictions then and my Banker Free Tip is going to be for Italy to Win on Penalties as not only are the odds available for this great value, they have looked just the better team in my opinion.

My First Goalscorer Free Tip will be for Spain’s Alvaro Morata to score the First Goal of the Game as he is currently leading the way as the tournament’s top goalscorer so far with 3 goals and he does look a very clinical finisher when he gets a chance.
