England v Iceland Preview, Euro 2016, Last 16, Monday 27th June 2016.

England so far haven’t produced the goods even though they were the far superior team in their opening game to Russia. They then faced Wales in which they looks nervy at first, and were then shocked just before half time when Gareth Bale fired past Joe Hart from long range which should of really been saved. They did manage to come out the stronger side in the second half but it was only when Vardy and Sturridge come on that England then looked dangerous, and luckily both were in the right place at the right time to win the game for England.

It was a must win situation against Slovakia really especially with how Russia were playing throughout the competition. Usually you’d expect Russia to win against Wales and Slovakia but for a strange reason were not even able to put up a fight. Wales took the early lead against the Russians which in turn should of really picked up England to push for a win, yet constant saves and blocks via the Slovakian defense halted England’s chances of three points and thus finished second behind Wales.

Iceland throughout the qualifying stages were a good side and often seen counter attacking with excellent effect. They did well against both Portugal and Hungary who themselves topped the group, and then had to face the easier side Austria in their final game. Austria themselves were exceptional during the competitions qualifying stages, so I did expect them to do better in this group, but instead finished bottom with Portugal coming in third.

The group was wide open with any of the four teams being able to finish top or second and be in a position to play England in the last 16 of the competition. Yet it was Iceland who managed to beat Austria and with the Hungary and Portugal game ending as a draw we eventually see Iceland come in second with Hungary winning the group. Iceland know they are the underdogs against England, yet are certainly in with a good chance of winning.

England Team News:

England are at full strength coming into this game and we should see fullbacks Danny Rose and Kyle Walker return having been rested against Slovakia. Deli Alli is also back having been rested and should start on Monday night. I am hoping Roy Hodgson drops Raheem Sterling who really hasn’t offered anything attacking wise with the Manchester City forward always failing to produce the final piece of magic. No idea on who will start up front for England with Kane, Sturridge, Vardy and Rashford all ready to produce.

Iceland Team News:

Iceland will come into this game with a full squad much like England, with manager Heimir Hallgrimsson having plenty of options for Monday night. We do hear however is that national legend Eidur Gudjohnsen is likely to be on the bench with younger options being preferred over the ex Chelsea and Bolton striker.

England v Iceland Head to Head Statistics:

England have met Iceland on three occasions in the past with England having never lost a game. Iceland have earned a 1 – 1 draw back in June of 1982 with the previous loss way back before that. The last time they met was in 2004 in which England humiliated them 6 – 1 in an International Friendly. England are the favourites to win this game and progress, but should be wary of Iceland and the fact they counter attack very successfully.

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

I’ve no idea what goals were scored in the first England win so will base this statistic on the last two games we have information for. In total we have ten goals scored in the three games we have recorded which is going to give us a goals per game average of 3.3. Now if we get a figure like that in Mondays game then surely there should be plenty of excitement. The way England are struggling in front of goal I am just not sure however.

England v Iceland Recent Form (Left to Right)

England: D W D W W

Iceland: W D D W L

England are the better team and are expected to have the better form coming into the game, yet in the three games both have played in this competition both are very equal in terms of results. In the last five games played England do come out just on top and are expected to progress into the last eight come Monday night.

England v Iceland Match Betting Odds Market

England are the stronger side and the bookmakers solid favourites to win the game this Monday evening regardless of how well Iceland have been playing in this tournament. The Draw after the 90 minutes is a good option especially with how bad England have been suffering in front of goal lately. With the fire power they have you would expect far better of Roy Hodgson’s attacking prowess. Iceland have done well to finish second in their group and did thoroughly deserve going into the knockout stages. England v Iceland Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

Last 16 action this Monday night witnesses our very own England verses a very counter attacking side Iceland. Although England are the clear and solid favourites to win this game come Monday, I personally do not feel the victory will come with such ease with Iceland really testing England’s defense on a permanent basis. Chris Smalling and whoever partners him on Monday will really need to be at their best and the way Walker and Rose have been playing we can only hope that continues.

We are unsure on who will start for England up front with Harry Kane clearly Roy Hodgson’s first choice. Jamie Vardy and Daniel Sturridge played well against Slovakia and many wondered why Sturridge got substituted for Harry Kane in the second half. When England do attack they look very dangerous, and we can only hope they continue to play that way but just produce more when it comes down to scoring the goals.

Iceland as we know can really damage sides when they counter attack which we have seen all competition with them earning points of each of the group stage teams. Having beaten Austria they also managed to take points from Portugal and then Hungary who won the group. Iceland themselves finished in second place and deservedly so with Portugal being a disappointment during the group stages of the competition.

My predictions for this game will of course see England win the game and progress, and I can only hope it isn’t via a penalty shootout which usually ends up with us packing our bags and going home. A side like Iceland really shouldn’t beat the likes of England so as my banker I am going to go for both teams to score and England to win in 90 minutes. The other I am going for is Harry Kane to score his first of the competition and for England to win the game within 90 minutes.
