FC Basel v Chelsea Preview, Champions League, Tuesday 26th November 2013

With FC Basel doing extremely well in their domestic league with currently sitting top on 30 points after 15 games they will be slightly annoyed that they have managed to drop a few points more recently in 2 away draws.

But in the Champions League things are a little up in the air for them as they require a win against Chelsea or Schalke and also have to rely on Schalke losing to Steaua Bucurest on Tuesday night.

Basel do however need to face Schalke in their last group match so if they do lose to Chelsea and Schalke either lose or draw then we could see another exciting game as the two teams battle for second place in Group E.

Chelsea can book their place in the next stage of the tournament with a victory in this game as 3pts would put Jose Mourinho’s side on 12pts with just one game left to play and that total would be more than enough to put them through as the group winners and after their impressive display over the weekend against West Ham who they beat 3-0 away from home, the whole squad will be confident of obtaining the right result come Tuesday night.

FC Basel Team News:

Striker Marco Strella is suspended and both Behrang Safari and Marcelo Diaz also miss out of this one as each player continues to receive treatment for respective injury problems. Other than these thresh players though manager Murat Yakin has a full squad to choose from and is likely to start with a 4-1-4-1 formation that was very effective over the weekend in their 4-1 domestic league victory over Thun that should see striker Giovanni Sio leading the attack up front with support from midfield being provided by Valentin Stocker, Mohamed Salah and Matias Delgado.

Chelsea Team News:

Fernando Torres and Tomas Kalas are the only two players missing for the visitors so expect Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho to start with a 4-2-3-1 formation which will see Samuel Eto’o leading the attack up front with support in behind coming from Oscar, Hazard and Ramires.

FC Basel v Chelsea Head to Head Statistics:

The game on Tuesday will be the sides 4th meeting and a good chance to pull one back in the stakes for Basel who did manage a shock victory over Chelsea away from home.

Chelsea however will be looking to rectify errors in the last meeting back in September. But in regards to the head to head statistics it is Chelsea who have the advantage, but that could change on Tuesday night as Basel isn’t an easy place to visit.

Average Goals Per Game ?

With 10 goals scored in the last 3 games it gives us an average of 3.33 goals per game. Chelsea are no strangers to FC Basel’s ground and have scored there twice before so it would suggest we could see a few goals being scored come Tuesday.

FC Basel v Chelsea Recent Form (Last 5 Results Left to Right)

FC Basel: W W D D D

Chelsea: W D W L W

Although Chelsea have suffered a loss to Newcastle United in the Premiership league a couple of weekends back they still have the better form if you were counting it as points. An although Basel did bear Chelsea at The Bridge you would still place the advantage with the Premiership club here.

FC Basel v Chelsea Match Betting Odds Market

FC Basel will struggle to win this game with their star striker suspended, but having won the reverse fixture in the group at Stamford Bridge 1-2 their price of 7/2 with Paddy Power (£50 Free Bets for New Customers) does seem a little on the large side considering they do have the all important home advantage.

The Draw is certainly a real possibility here as with Chelsea just needing a point to guarantee their place in the next round I can see them sitting back and defending a lead if they get one, so the current odds of 13/5 with Stan James (£10 Free Bets for New Customers) definitely receiving plenty of interest from punters.

Chelsea have the stronger squad at their disposal but have not been that great away from home this season and their current best price of 20/23 with BetVictor (£25 Free Bets for New Customers) is a bit short for me despite having had a good result in the Premiership away from home over the weekend against West Ham United.

FC Basel v Chelsea Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

A tough game to be really confident in predicting a clear winner from as for me both of these sides have an equal chance of winning this one and it does seem that the Draw could be the sensible choice here.

Chelsea do have a far superior squad than FC Basel and with the hosts also missing their star striker Streller who is suspended it’s only going to be a much tougher game to win. However, Chelsea have not really started to get going yet this season in my opinion and although they do look the more likely winners on paper the safer option does seem to be the goals markets for this one.
