France v Republic of Ireland Preview, Euro 2016, Last 16, Sunday 26th June 2016.

It’s the hosts first knock out game this Sunday after having a nice break with them being the first team to qualify for the next stages of the competition. They were taken to a goalless draw last Sunday by Switzerland and really didn’t look like a team that could potentially win this competition, although they did look far better in the wins over Romania and Albania.

France did top the group with ease and as expected it was Switzerland who came in second with five points with one win and two draws. So far we have seen some top stars for France perform during EURO 2016 with West Ham United’s winger Dimitri Payet who is so far the nations top scorer with two efforts. He was close to a third against Switzerland with an incredible volley in the dying moments of the match only to hit the cross bar and bounce out.

It is both Irish sides who are grabbing a lot of the headlines during this competition with both somehow defying all odds having qualified for the knockouts stages. Republic of Ireland’s story however is one to be told with many critics questioning if the side could even earn a point during the group stages. With a draw against Sweden they could of even won come the end of 90 minutes, yet they then managed to get humiliated 3 – 0 by Belgium.

It was the toughest game of the group that turned the countries favour when all expected Italy to talk out easy winners. Republic of Ireland knew it was a must win game and fought like champions to not concede against top of the group. The Irish were close to heading home yet somewhere out of nowhere a cross came in for Robbie Brady to head home for an 85th minute winner. There were amazing scenes and plenty of tears to be seen by players and coaches and surely something to be remembered by all.

France Team News:

France themselves have no injury worries right now and after resting star players N’Golo Kante, Olivier Giroud and West Ham United’s Dimiti Payet against Switzerland, we are likely to see them return to the starting lineup. Payet has so far scored twice during this competition and nearly made it a third in the dying moments of the game after coming on as a substitute against Switzerland.

Republic of Ireland Team News:

We finally see the return of Stoke City striker Jon Walters with the player suffering an Achilles problem before the competition started. We should however see manager Martin O’Neill stick with Shane Long up front with the countries top goal scorer Robbie Keane on the bench. Stephen Ward hurt his ankle during the Italy match and did miss training on Friday, although could be okay for Sunday.

France v Republic of Ireland Head to Head Statistics:

In the last five games played against each other we have seen both sides do rather well. France come out on top however with two wins, where as underdogs the Republic of Ireland have managed to earn three draws against the French who are considered a very tough side. In total they have met on 16 occasions with France winning 7 and Republic of Ireland winning 4 times, leaving the remaining 5 games ending as draws.

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

In the sixteen games featured against each other we have seen a total of 34 goals scored. This is going to give us a goals per game average of 2.1 which is rather low considering the fire power France have at their disposal. In the last five games we have only seen four goals scored, so I can only hope we see more entertainment this coming Sunday.

France v Republic of Ireland Recent Form (Left to Right)

France:  D W W W W

Republic Of Ireland: W L D L D

France are of course the better team in form here and of course one of the bookmakers favourites to actually go on and win this competition. They should of really won their last game against Switzerland and almost did with minutes left to play. Republic of Ireland managed to beat Italy in their last game so France will need to beware and hope it was a pure fluke when they meet this Sunday.

Republic of Ireland may of beaten an aging Italian side but can they realistically beat the hosts France when they meet this Sunday? Who knows as all we can say is this team play with so much passions the result could go either way on the day. France v Republic of Ireland Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

Sunday afternoons fixture witnesses hosts France against the Republic of Ireland who humiliated the aging Italian side to earn a place in the first stages of the knockout rounds. France are of course the solid favourites to progress into the quarter finals although must be wary against the Irish as sometimes passion and determination can cause upset to even the best of teams, and lets acknowledge here that both Irish sides certainly have plenty of belief and passion.

France have played well in their opening two group games and did look like solid contenders to go on and win the competition if form was kept up. Yet the game against Switzerland looked rather boring and eventually ended goalless even though Payet almost won it for France in the dying moments of the game. Granted the Swiss are a good side, I just expected more from a French side with so much clear talent up on show.

Republic of Ireland are used to carrying the underdog tags and were predicted like their neighbors to not even earn a point during the group stages of the competition. I love it when teams as passionate as the Irish prove the critics wrong and we as footballing fans get to witness the delight when they manage to beat world beating teams such as Italy. Sadly for Northern Ireland they couldn’t get past Wales on Saturday and now face a plane ride home with their heads held very high.

The Republic of Ireland still have a chance of joining Wales in the quarter finals regardless of them being the massive underdogs, and if they play like they did against the Italians then why not dream that they can progress. They should also of beaten Sweden who finished bottom of the group with one point having lost their other two games against Italy and Belgium.

My predictions for this game is of course sadly going to be with France, as surely backing the Irish to pull off another shock victory is seen as unlikely? I would love to be proved wrong and if they do beat hosts France then would be happy to put money on them winning the competition? Joking aside lets get on with the predictions. For my banker I am going to go for France to win the game and not concede a goal during the match.

The next I am going for is a little outlandish as part of me really does want to back the Irish to either progress or at least worry the hosts France. So with that said I am going to go for Republic of Ireland to take France into extra time, where France will score and win the game. As said I do hope I am wrong, but have to go with a more realistic gut feeling, even though I do want the Republic of Ireland to pull of another shock win during this competition.
