Liverpool v Sunderland Preview, Premiership, Wednesday 26th March 2014

Liverpool head into the game currently enjoying one of their best season’s in the Premiership for many years and with their strike force of Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez having already scored 48 goals between them so far this season, you can see why Brendan Rogers side is doing so well and a place back in the UEFA Champions League or even a title challenge does look a likely event if they can keep their key players fit for the remainder of the season.

I don’t think anybody had Liverpool down as title contenders when it all kicked off back in August last year, but with them currently sat in 2nd place in the table and just 4 points behind leaders Chelsea with a game in hand, people are starting to feel that this could be Liverpool’s year.

Liverpool have scored a very impressive 82 goals so far this season and we still have 8 games to play and I am sure they will be looking to secure that all important 18 goals in the next 8 games which would see them reach 100 goals for the season and with the way the side has been playing, this looks a very realistic outcome.

Sunderland head into this game having had a drastic change of form as since Gus Poyet took charge we have seen them lose just 2 in 10 games with Fabio Borini and Adam Johnson in terrific form. However the honeymoon period seems to be over for Poyet and his team as they haven’t won a game in their last five outings which has them occupying 18th position in the league table and very much far from safety at the moment.

With The Black Cats just one point above 20th placed team Fulham and travelling to Anfield on Wednesday night I don’t think they will be looking forward to this game, especiallyhaving seen Liverpool smash 6 goals past Cardiff City over the weeekend and this free scoring Liverpool side seem to be hammering everyone put it front of them at the moment.

Liverpool Team News:

Liverpool will head into this game with just the one confirmed injury which is left back Jose Enrique who is still out with a knee problem which he suffered last year. Manager Brendan Rodgers will be very happy that he has his main players fit for this game and with no suspensions he can name his strongest lineup for this one.

Sunderland Team News:

Sunderland Striker Steven Fletcher will face a late fitness test ahead of the trip to Anfield on Wednesday night. The Black Cats do have one confirmed injury which is goalkeeper Kieran Westwood who has been sidelined since late last year, but other than that manager Gus Poyet can also name a very strong side for this game as he also has no suspensions to worry about.

Manchester United v Manchester City Head to Head Statistics:

This meeting between the two clubs on Wednesday night will become the 133rd meeting between the two clubs over the years. In the previous 132 meetings Liverpool have won 62 (34 of those coming at Anfield), whilst Sunderland have won 41 times (Just 14 times at Anfield) and there has been 28 draws (with 18 coming at Anfield).

The head to head statistics table below shows Liverpool having a slight advantage heading into this game as they have managed to win 2 of the previous 5 matches played, where as Sunderland have managed just the 1 victory and the remaining 2 games have finished all square.

29/09/13 PRL Sunderland – Liverpool 1 : 3
02/01/13 PRL Liverpool – Sunderland 3 : 0
15/09/12 PRL Sunderland – Liverpool
1 : 1
10/03/12 PRL Sunderland – Liverpool 1 : 0
13/08/11 PRL Liverpool – Sunderland
1 : 1

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

In the previous 132 games these two clubs have played before we see that there has been a total of 417 goals scored which gives us an average of 3.15 goals per game.

At Anfield there has been 66 games played with 231 goals being scored which gives us an average of 350 goals per game.

Taking both statistics into account I think we should see at least 3 goals scored on Wednesday night and even the possibility of maybe 4 or 5 hitting the back of the nets if Liverpool’s form is anything to go by.

Liverpool v Sunderland Recent Form (Left to Right)

Liverpool: L W W W W

Sunderland: L L L D L

Liverpool have a commanding advantage on the recent form stats having managed to win 4 from their last 5 matches. Sunderland have failed to win any of their previous 5 matches played of which they have lost 4.

Looking at those results, it comes as no real surprise to see Liverpool in 2nd postion of the league table and Sunderland in desperate trouble in 18th position.

Liverpool v Sunderland Match Betting Odds Market

Liverpool are in the kind of form that could win them the League title, they have won their last five outings and look unstoppable at the moment. However they have got to play current League leaders Chelsea and title contenders Manchester City, they play both of these games at Anfield which might be key to the top 3 places this season. In this fixture I cant see anything other than a Liverpool win and the bookmakers agree with that with the best price coming in at 2/11 with Betfred (£25 Free Bets for New Customers).

The Draw in my opinion is the very best result that Sunderland could hope for here, but I think they would have to play very well in defence for this to happen and I just cant see Liverpool letting a game like this dent their title hopes. The best price of this game finishing all square is available at a huge 8/1 with Bet365 (£200 Matched Bonus Bets for New Customers).

Sunderland’s form is terrible at the moment and their key players are just not performing at such a vital time of the season. After this game on Wednesday I get the feeling its going to look even worse for them although Sunderland fans might fancy a flutter on their team to cause what would be a huge shock win and they do look a bit overpriced with the best odds on offer being a massive 18/1 with Bet365 (£200 Matched Bonus Bets for New Customers).

Liverpool v Sunderland Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

In this game on Wednesday night I cant see anything other than a Liverpool win but its quite a difficult game to give 2 tips for as Liverpool are free scoring and the bookmakers know this so have short odds on there being a lot of goals scored.

This week I am going to opt for there being over 3.5 goals scored in the match given how many goals Liverpool score and also how bad Liverpool’s defence is this season, also with there being an average of 3.5 goals scored per game at Anfield I think this is the most sensible choice as the main banker bet.

With Liverpool leaking goals as well as scoring them this season my saver this week is going to be both teams to score with the current odds available for this looking very generous indeed and hopefully Sunderlan’s main hitmen this season Fabio Borini and Adam Johnson will find their scoring boots and thus provide a very exciting game for both sets of fans and neutrals.
