Galatasaray v Chelsea Preview, Champions League, Wednesday 26th February 2014

Galatasaray were not fancied to progress through from Group B with both Real Madrid and Juventus involved, but manager Roberto Mancini’s side defied the odds and finished in second place and now have a real chance to make it through to the quarter finals for the second season in a row, although both players and fans will be hoping that if they do make it through they manage to avoid Real Madrid this time around who dumped them out last season.

Chelsea are riding high at the top of the English Premiership league table and things are looking good with ‘The Special One’ now back in charge, but their most recent performance saw them struggle to beat Everton and but for an extremely fortunate injury time own goal they would of only managed a draw at Stamford Bridge in front of their own fans and that certainly would not of pleased a certain Mr Mourino, so it will be important for the Chelsea players to bring back at least a draw with them back to London for the second leg of this last 16 match which is being played on the 18th March.

Galatasaray Team News:

Eray Iscan and Aydin Yilmaz are both unavailable for the hosts for this game as they continue to recover from respective injury problems. Other than these two players though, manager Roberto Mancini has a full squad to choose his starting lineup from which looks likely to include ex-Chelsea striker Didier Drogba leading the attack up front against his former club.

Chelsea Team News:

Tomas Kalas and Marco van Ginkel are the only two players definitely ruled out for this game as each player continues to receive treatment for respective injury problems. David Luiz, Oscar and Mikel will all undertake a late fitness test to see if they can be involved. Eto’o could be rested in favour of Fernando Torres despite the 50 million pound flop having yet to live up to his huge transfer fee from Liverpool.

Galatasaray v Chelsea Head to Head Statistics

Wednesday night’s game from the Turk Telecom Arena will become the very first meeting between the two clubs, so we are unfortunately unable to bring you any detailed previous head to head statistics for this game.

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

As this will become the very first meeting between the two clubs and there are no previous average goals per game statistics to display we have provided you with some stats based on what both clubs achieved during their group phase of the competition.

Galatasaray scored 8 goals in their 6 group matches played which provides us with an average goals per game statistic of just 1.33 and with Chelsea having scored 12 goals in their 6 group matches this provides us with an average goals per game statistic of 2.00.

Both average goals per game statistics seem to suggest that this game on wednesday night at the Turk Telecom Arena is unlikely to see many goals scored with the possibility of just 1 or 2 goals going in.

Galatasaray v Chelsea Recent Form (Left to Right)

Galatasaray: W W D D W

Chelsea: W W D L W

Very little between the two clubs on the recent form stats with both sides having managed 3 wins each from their last 5 matches played, although Galatasaray do head into this game having remained unbeaten during their last 5 games played compared to Chelsea who have lost a game in their last 5.

Galatasaray v Chelsea Match Betting Odds Market

Galatasaray will obviously fancy their chances of winning this game and if they are to have any real chance of progressing through to the quarter finals stage of this tournament, then this game on wednesday night is a must win, although the online bookmakers don’t seem to believe that Roberto Mancini’s side are capable of beating Chelsea and currently have the hosts priced up at a best price of 10/3 with Bet365 (£200 Matched Bonus Bets for New Customers), which for me does look overpriced considering the Turk Telecom Arena is a very difficult place to go and get a victory at.

The Draw would be a result that suited Chelsea and one that Jose Mourinho would be quite happy to take home with him for the 2nd leg at Stamford Bridge on the 18th March, so it definitely looks worth getting on as your main saver bet for this game at a current best price of 12/5 with Paddy Power (£50 Free Bets for New Customers).

Chelsea struggled to beat Everton over the weekend despite having the all important home advantage and although they do have the stronger squad of players than Galatasaray have, I am not entirely that confident that they can win this game on wednesday night over in what is definitely going to be a very hostile atmosphere and for me their current best price of 21/20 with BetVictor (£25 Free Bets for New Customers) does look a bit on the short side and no real value in a game that could very easily go either way on the night.

Galatasaray v Chelsea Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

There is a lot more to this game than meets the eye and it does surprise me to see the online bookmakers having Chelsea priced up as the clear favourites to win this game as for me they still don’t have an inform goalscorer up front and that is going to be crucial if they are to navigate their way through to the latter stages of this tournament.

Galatasaray will be missing Yilmaz in their attack for this game and he is a huge loss for the hosts as he is currently the clubs top goalscorer and although they still have backup in Didier Drogba, I would of been more confident of Galatasaray to win this game if Yilmaz was involved.

No real average goals per game stats to go on as this will be the first ever meeting between the two clubs over recent years, but going on what each club managed in their group, it does seem to suggest that this game is not going to see many goals scored on wednesday night with maybe just 1 or 2 if we are lucky, so the obvious choice from a betting point of view does seem to be the Under 2.5 Goals here.
