Liverpool v Southampton Preview, Premiership, Sunday 25th October 2015.

Liverpool new boss Jurgen Klopp witnessed his first home game in charge mid week when they welcomed Russian side Rubin Kazan to Anfield for another Europa League group game. Liverpool have drawn all three of their European games so far this season, and surprisingly enough it still leaves them in second place, four points behind current leaders Sion. Liverpool have been extremely poor this season, thus the sacking of former manager Brenden Rodgers. The clubs last win in the Premiership was at the end of September at home to Aston Villa and have since then drawn the last two against Everton and Tottenham Hotspurs. Mid table is not what we come to expect of Liverpool, with the club usually sitting somewhere around the top five in recent years.

Southampton were fantastic last season and held a respectable top four position all the way up until Christmas. They eventually finished well enough to make it into Europe for the first time in club history, only to be eliminated out of the competition far too early this season due to a very poor start. They have picked up form recently having beaten Champions Chelsea at The Bridge, as well as Swansea City at home. They took a 2 – 0 lead last weekend against Leicester City, only to throw the win away conceding two goals with the equalizer coming in the ninetieth minute. Southampton maybe away from home come Sunday, yet with the way Liverpool have been playing I do feel they are certainly in with a chance if they manage to perform to their best.

Liverpool Team News:

John Flanagan’s knee surgery back in April is going well, although we don’t know when the youngster is set to return. Joseph Gomez has been out a couple of weeks with a knee issue, while club captain Jordan Henderson continues to miss out with a broken metatarsal. Danny Ings is now out for the rest of the season with knee ligament damage while Jordan Rossiter is out with a hamstring. Daniel Sturridge missed the game against Tottenham Hotspurs with his knee, and is still 50/50 for Sundays game.

Southampton Team News:

Fraser Forster (knee) has been out since March and wont likely return until early next year. Florin Gardos is another long term with a knee injury, while Shane Long should be back in a few weeks due to an ankle injury. Jay Rodriguez has recovered from his long term injury only to now have an issue with his foot. Although the attacking midfielder could still feature with him having a 75% chance of playing.

Liverpool v Southampton Head to Head Statistics:

Southampton did well against Liverpool back in 2013, with them winning both home and away. The last three games however have gone in Liverpool’s favor with two away wins and the home 2 – 1 back in 2014. We have a total of 74 games recorded between these two Premiership clubs, where as expected it is Liverpool who dominate with 38 wins and 20 loses. Leaving a total of 18 games ending as draws of some sort.

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

In these 76 games played we have seen a total of 202 goals scored which is going to give us an average of 2.6 goals scored per game. Which when looking at the above table is pretty much spot on. So going for the below option could be a good choice come Sunday.

Liverpool v Southampton Recent Form All Competitions (Left to Right)

Liverpool: D D D D W

Southampton: D W W W L

Both teams haven’t been the best, yet out of the two you have to pick Southampton as the better team in form having won three out of their last five fixtures. Liverpool however have only won the once, which was against Aston Villa some time ago.

Liverpool v Southampton Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

Premiership action Sunday evening comes to us live on Sky Sports 1 High Definition and features home side Liverpool against Southampton who are the side in better form. Granted Liverpool haven’t lost a game since the 3 – 1 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford. They have drawn all three of their Europa League games yet must start to win a few if they wish to progress into the knock out stages. Right now middle of the table isn’t acceptable for a club such as Liverpool, even though there is only four points between them and forth placed West Ham United.

Liverpool and Southampton’s last loss was to the same club, Manchester United. With both being back in October and a week apart. In the last five games Southampton have been the better side having won twice in the league, and a 6 – 0 victory against MK Dons in the Capital One Cup. They could of made it four wins in five, yet threw away a two nil lead to Leicester City, the equalizer coming at the end of the game in the 90th minute. Liverpool have drawn four of their last five games, and really struggling to score more than one goal in the match. It doesn’t help knowing Liverpool are struggling for strikers that are fit.

Sundays match predictions between these two clubs will no doubt be difficult, seeing as Liverpool are very hit and miss and also the fact that Southampton threw away a perfectly good lead last weekend. For the first I am going to go for 2 to 3 goals being scored in the match, which should certainly fit in well with the last five head to head encounters. The next I am going for is Liverpool to win the game 2 – 1, which they do certainly need seeing as though they haven’t won in nearly a month.
