Scotland v Northern Ireland Preview, International Friendly, Wednesday 25th March 2015

Although it may only be a friendly, I can imagine Scotland will be looking to get back to winning ways after their last fixture against bitter rivals England. Before that they had only lost the once in their last ten fixtures in all competitions, which was of course against World Cup winners Germany in the European Championship Qualifiers. Scotland are joint second right now with Germany in the Group Stages where we can actually see Poland top with ten points from a maximum of twelve. Scotland did earn a well fought 2 – 2 draw against Poland who have so far beaten all teams including the Germans.

Apart from Northern Ireland’s last game we have seen the Irish in far better form with them winning three out of their four qualifying games. Which does put them second in the group table and only one point off of leaders Romania who did beat Northern Ireland in their last fixture. Their next European Championship Qualifying fixture comes after this friendly against Scotland in which they play hosts to Finland who they have yet to play. It then starts all over again with them next to face Romania in Ireland, where a win could see them top of the group, a feat I can only imagine they could dream of considering their run of form before this competition kicked off.

Scotland Team News:

Over the next two games we have been told Gordon Strachan plans to use the whole depth of his squad in an attempt to keep all club managers happy with the domestic seasons coming into their final few months. Scotland legend Stuart McCall leaves his role as Scotland coach to take over as manager of Rangers until the end of the season. Ross MsCormack has withdrawn from the fixture due to a knee injury he picked up against Leeds United.

Northern Ireland Team News:

Northern Ireland will be without Dundee Uniteds Paul Paton who also has a knee injury and will be replaced by Lee Hodson. Paton was originally called up to replace Sammy Clingan, yet has now opened the door for Hodson to stake a claim. Daniel Lafferty has been called up to replace Shane Ferguson. Both Ferguson and Clingan have both been ruled out with knee injuries.

Scotland v England Head to Head Statistics:

In the last five head to head encounters we have mainly seen draws between the two clubs, although Scotland do come out on top with a couple of wins. In total we have eight games recorded where Northern Ireland have only won the once, to Scotland’s four victories. Leaving three games ending as draws and all seen below in the last five.

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

In the eight games we have recorded between the two nations, we have seen a total of fourteen goals scored. This is going to give us an average of 1.75 goals per game, so I am hoping that is due to change in the upcoming fixture. Apart from the last fixture which ended 3 – 0 to Scotland, we did rarely see a goal scored between the two sides.

Scotland v Northern Ireland Recent Form (Left to Right)

Scotland: L W D W L

Northern Ireland: L W W W L

On paper it is the Irish who are in better form when looking at the last five fixtures played, yet we need to be realistic here and take note just who Scotland have been playing during their qualifying campaign. So I am going to back Scotland to win here as they are by far the better team in overall form.

Scotland v Northern Ireland Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

International friendlies once again kick off this week with also some European Championship Qualifiers to contend with. For some the international break has been welcomed, yet others would rather it never happened. This Wednesday we see Scotland take on Northern Ireland at Hampden Park in what could be a feisty encounter between the two locals. Scotland’s last fixture was against another local nation where they had lost 3 – 1 to England.

Both nations are in good form, which is something usually unheard of when talking about Scotland and Northern Ireland. The home side for example have only lost twice in their last eleven fixtures, which was against Germany in the qualifiers, and of course to England in a recent friendly. Northern Ireland are also doing well, having won three of their four qualifying games and only losing to tough side Romania away from home. They are second in their group and only one point behind the leaders. Scotland are third, yet joint on points with Germany who are second, with Poland currently leading the group three points clear.

My predictions for this international friendly will see Scotland win the game after ninety minutes, although I do feel if the Irish play well they could force a draw on the night. So maybe lets take both in some form or fashion. So for the first I am going to go for a correct score of Scotland to win the game 2 – 1. The next will be for both nations to score on the night, and for the game to end as a draw after ninety minutes. Both of which I feel have a good chance of coming in either way.
