Aston Villa v Liverpool Preview, Premiership, Sunday 24th August 2013

Aston Villa head into this game with manager Paul Lambert no doubt still fuming with what happened midweek when watching his side lose 2-1 away against Chelsea after Ivanovic scored the winner for Jose Mourinho’s side late on in the game having survived being sent off earlier in the game by the official.

However, that result now needs to be put in the past as Aston Villa now face another very difficult game when they welcome Liverpool to Villa Park on Saturday evening.

Liverpool won their opening game of the season 1-0 at home against Stoke City last weekend, but although they did control the game and had loads of possession, Stoke City did have a penalty saved and was it not for the exceptional talent of their goal keeper Simon Mingolet, Liverpool could of found themselves losing the game and were quite fortunate to get maximum points in many people’s opinion.

Aston Villa v Liverpool Team News

Aston Villa Team News:

Manager Paul Lambert has a tough decision to make on who he picks for this game with the majority of the first team having been in action midweek against Chelsea, although the players will have had three days rest and with it being so early in the season I would expect Villa to lineup with pretty much the same starting eleven that took to the field against Chelsea on Tuesday night with Benteke no doubt the first name on the team sheet having already scored three times in two games this season.

Liverpool Team News:

Manager Brendan Rogers will also probably start with the same eleven players that held on to that 1-0 win over Stoke City last weekend, but I would expect to see Raheem Sterling involved at some point again during this game as the young England International has been on fire during the pre-season and will be eager to impress his manager.

Who Has The Advantage?

Saturday evening’s game from Villa Park Stadium will become the 163rd meeting between the two clubs over the years, of which Aston Villa have won 48, Liverpool have won 79 and there has been 35 draws. From those numbers we see that Liverpool have a commanding advantage overall, but recent meetings between the two sides show things very much closer.

From the last five games played, Aston Villa have won 2, Liverpool have won 2 and there has been 1 draw which suggests that the game on Saturday evening could be extremely close and go either way on the day.

Average Goals Per Game?

506 goals have been scored in the previous 162 games played between the two clubs which provides us with an average goals per game statistic of 3.12 which indicates that we should see at least a couple of goals hit the back of the nets on Sunday evening.

Aston Villa v Liverpool Recent Form

Aston Villa: W W W W W

Liverpool: W W W L W

Aston Villa have been in excellent form of late winning all 5 of their previous games played. Liverpool haven’t done too bad either having managed to win 4 of their last 5 games played, but were did suffer a 0-1 defeat away against Celtic back on the 10th of August.

Aston Villa v Liverpool Match Betting Odds Market.

Aston Villa are not given much chance of winning this game by the online bookmakers despite having not lost any of their previous 5 matches and their current best price of 10/3 with BetVictor – £25 Free Bets for New Customers, looks certain to tempt a few punters.

The Draw has happened once in the previous five meetings between the clubs and many would find it difficult to split these two teams come Sunday evening, so current odds of 11/4 with Bet365 – £200 Free Bets for New Customers does represent decent value here in what looks like being a very close affair.

Liverpool were quite impressive in their victory last weekend against Stoke City, but their failure to find the back of the net will no doubt be a growing concern for manager Brendan Rogers and for me their current best price of 19/20 with Coral – £50 Free Bets for New Customers does look a bit on the short side.

Aston Villa v Liverpool Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

Aston Villa have the all important home advantage and having watched both their performances this season I think the online bookmakers have them priced up at a much bigger price than they should be, so there is definitely value in taking the home win here.

Liverpool are way too short for me here as although their squad does have the better players, as we saw last weekend, they do seem to be all playing for themselves and there really isn’t much team work going on when the ball gets past the half way line and I can see them struggling to cope with Villa in this game.

However, with Aston Villa having been defeated midweek, I can certainly see that result having a huge impact to the confidence of the players come Saturday evening and the more sensible option from a betting point of view does seem to be the goals markets.
