Manchester City v Barcelona Preview, Champions League, Tuesday 24th February 2015

Manchester City enjoyed their result on Saturday evening when they welcomed Newcastle United to The Etihad Stadium. They would happily welcome back The Toon Army anytime after humiliating them 5 – 0 on the night. It only took two minutes until the Champions opened the scoring when Sergio Aguero converted an early spot kick. Nasri, Dzeko also scored one each only for David Silva to complete the rout with a brace in the second half. The week before was also a high scoring game with a 4 – 1 victory over Stoke City away from home. City will want to make sure they capitalize on Barcelona’s recent unexpected loss to Malaga and at least travel to Spain with a couple of goal cushion.

Well there goes Barcelona’s eleven game winning run when they suffered to an incredible shock 1 – 0 defeat to Malaga at home. The last time they lost was back at the beginning of January when they were also beaten 1 – 0 back then, yet this time to Real Sociedad. Regardless of the result I still see Barcelona as the stronger side and would be no doubt joint favourites to win the game Tuesday night. The main thing for Barcelona to consider would be to not come away from this game with a loss. Or if it was then at least grab an away goal which is more than doable for a club of this stature. Barcelona have a league game after the City game, then fave Villarreal again for the second leg of the Cope del Rey semi final.

Manchester City Team News:

Manchester City’s only reported injury worry right now is England Midfielder James Milner who currently has a knee problem. The clubs top scorer comes as no surprise with it being Sergio Aguero, the Argentine striker has so far scored 17 Premiership and 5 Champions League goals so far this season yet hasn’t scored any in the English Cup competitions with City now in neither.

Barcelona Team News:

Barcelona still have new signing Thomas Vermaelen missing due to his hamstring, with the defender yet to make an appearance for his new club. Adama Traore returns to action after serving his suspension and we also have seen Dani Alves back in action. The clubs top scorer, like City, comes as no surprise. Seeing as though every single year Lionel Messi always becomes the clubs top scorer. The Argentine has netted an incredible 37 times this season.

Manchester City v Barcelona Head to Head Statistics

This fixture between these two massive clubs will make it the fourth we have ever recorded, with Barcelona having had the better results with two wins and a single loss. Barcelona have also beaten Manchester City on their home turf and have only lost to the English Champions in a friendly game, and not in a competitive match.

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

In the three games we have recorded there has only been six goals on total, this will of course give us the solid average of two goals per game and something I would feel comfortable selecting for Tuesday nights encounter.

Manchester City v Barcelona Recent Form (Left to Right)

Manchester City: W W D D L

Barcelona: L W W W W

Barcelona, regardless of their most recent loss, are by far the better team in form here having recorded an eleven game winning streak before the weekend. Both sides are second in their domestic leagues and even almost as close as each other to the league leaders Real Madrid and Chelsea. City have the home advantage although have lost last year to Barcelona both home and away.

Manchester City v Barcelona Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

Champions League action once again kicks off and come Tuesday we see ITV1 High Definition showing English Champions Manchester City verses Spanish giants Barcelona. Last season Manchester City were knocked out to Barcelona and will not want to experience the same result this time round. Both sides are in good form although Barcelona did lose their most recent game when Malaga humiliated them 1 – 0 at the Camp Nou.

Manchester City seem to have recovered after they dropped points against Chelsea and Hull City where both games ended one goal each. They have had one loss in their last five games, which was the 2 – 0 defeat to Championship side Middlesbrough in the 4th round of the FA Cup. Yet Arsenal have now knocked Middlesbrough out to now Face Manchester United at Old Trafford in the quarter finals. Barcelona themselves had won eleven games on the trot in all competitions before welcoming Malaga to their ground last weekend.

My predictions for this encounter will back both teams to win in some form or fashion. The first I plan to take is for Manchester City to stay strong at the back and hold off Messi, Neymar and Suarez in any attempts of scoring. So lets go for a correct scoreline of City to win 2 – 0 here. The next I am going for is both teams to score and Barcelona to win the game. Which I feel is more than possible when looking at their previous form and experiences against the English Champions.
