Southampton v Tottenham Hotspur Preview, Premiership, Sunday 22nd December 2013

Southampton come into this game on the back of some impressive performances including the 1 – 1 draw at home to Manchester City, a club who are basically tearing apart most teams right now including German champions Bayern Munich. Southampton will be looking to capitalize on Tottenham Hotspurs recent sacking of AVB and after also seeing them lose the last two games. Southampton manager Pochettino has done wondrous work at the club this year and has seen them compete in the top 4 spot for the first part of the season and its only the last month or so where results have suffered.

A lot of eyes will be on Tim Sherwood for this game as he looks to take charge at Spurs on a full time basis, something I personally see as unlikely seeing Levi’s way of doing things which don’t exactly earn him the nice guy reward. Tottenham Hotspurs will also be looking to bounce back to winning ways against Southampton who before the last two games were severely lacking in positive form. If Tim Sherwood was looking to claim the managers seat on a more permanent basis then a win against Southampton is a must on Sunday.

Southampton Team News:

News in the Southampton camp see Adam Lallana and Morgan Schneiderlin return after completing some game time with coming on as substitutes against Newcastle United and both will look likely to start ahead of the game against Spurs. Southampton will access Nathaniel Clyne ahead of the match after he recently returned from a hamstring injury.

Tottenham Hotspur Team News:

Tim Sherwood’s first role is to welcome back Michael Dawson after he was suspended and missed the midweek Capital One Cup game, but Spurs are still without Paulinho who is still banned for the match following his red card against Liverpool. Andros Townsend is out of the game with a hamstring injury and Tottenham are still without Kaboul and Jan Vertonghen.

Southampton v Tottenham Hotspur Head to Head Statistics:

In the 72 games played between these two sides we have seen 32 victories by Tottenham Hotspurs to Southampton 23 which as you can see would give the London club the advantage when looking at head to head statistics. We also have seen 17 draws with 11 of them when Tottenham Hotspurs travel to St Mary’s.

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

Also in the 72 games played we have seen a total of 213 goals scored by either side, which would give us an average of 2.95 goals per game. Which should indicate we see a few goals on Sunday.

Southampton v Tottenham Hotspur Recent Form (Left to Right)

Southampton: D D L L L

Tottenham Hotspur: L L W W W

Southampton have dropped off in the last two months with some poor results after having to face league leaders Arsenal and title contenders Chelsea. Although they did lose to Aston Villa the week after the next game where they faced Manchester City proved to be a little more fruitful after the game ended as a draw.

Southampton v Tottenham Hotspur Match Betting Odds Market

Southampton maybe at home here but are still second favourites for this game ahead of Sunday, and the best odds are coming in @ 8/5 with Ladbrokes – £30 Free Bets when Registering a New Account.

The Draw is a possibility but to be honest I can see both teams going for the win here and bookmakers see the best odds currently @ 12/5 with BetVictor – £25 Free Bets For New Customers Registering an Account.

Tottenham Hotspur are without a manager coming into the game and we see Tim Sherwood step up and look to take charge full time and I can imagine only a win here will aid towards that decision. We have the best odds coming in @ 2/1 with Bet365 – £200 Free Bets For New Customers Registering an Account.

Southampton v Tottenham Hotspur Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

Considering everything mentioned here in the head to head statistics etc I can still see Tottenham Hotspurs looking to get back to winning ways for this game and if Tim Sherwood is hoping to keep the hot seat for some time only a win for Spurs will aid in his claim. Southampton have started to rebuild their form in recent weeks with a couple of draws against tough opponents and this game will be no easier as Spurs are also to be considered a top side with the amount of money they have spent.

So as for predictions we could attempt a correct score which if I am honest my choice would be a 2 – 1 Spurs win, but when predicting correct scores its always going to be a tough one regardless of who is playing. So for me I am going for both teams to score and for Tottenham Hotspurs to win which with them playing away should give some good odds. The other prediction is for Daniel Osvaldo to score and for the home side Southampton to win the game after 90 minutes.
