Anderlecht v Tottenham Hotspur Preview, Europa League, Thursday 22nd October 2015.

After the first group game against Monaco we were expecting Anderlecht to do much better when it came down to playing a poor side such as Qarabag. Yet a 1 – 0 loss away from home to deal with they will now need to produce something against this Tottenham Hotspurs side or potentially face an early exit from the Europa League. They are currently sitting bottom of the group and a win at home Thursday night could see themselves back into the competition being on level points with current leaders Spurs. In their domestic league however they do seem to be playing far better, and currently sit third in the Pro League table just one point off the top. There is a lot of upcoming talent coming through the Belgian league with players such as Hazard and Lakaku who play in the Premiership. Will there be any to shine on Thursday against Tottenham Hotspurs?

Tottenham Hotspurs have been up and down when looking at the form table, and in their last three games in all competitions have only managed to draw. These were draws against respectable teams with Monaco and Swansea City away from home, and then Liverpool at White Hart Lane more recently. Before that they had lost in the Capital One Cup to bitter rivals Arsenal, only to then bounce back and shock Manchester City with a 4 – 1 winning romp. The London side are currently top of the Europa League Group and a win on Thursday night will certainly not harm their chances of progressing once more into the knock out stages. The win over City and the two recent Premiership draws have seen Tottenham Hotspurs climb the table ever so slightly with them now sitting in seventh, just behind Crystal Palace and Leicester City.

Anderlecht Team News:

Sadly for Anderlecht Mahmoud Hassan was ruled out for a few months last week after under going a shoulder operation, while other long term injured player Aaron Leya Iseka adds to the woes with a knee issue. One good thing for Anderlecht was that the side got back to winning ways at the weekend with a 4 – 0 win over Zulte Waregem, although they really do need a win in the Europa League if they are looking to progress into the knock out round.

Tottenham Hotspur Team News:

Injuries in the Tottenham Hotspurs camp isn’t the best with a few first team players missing from the current lineup. Nabil Bentaleb is still missing with and ankle ligament issue while Ryan Mason once again misses out due to his knee. Alex Pritchard (ankle) and Heung-Min Son (foot) are still ruled out while new entry Nacer Chadli now joins the list after having to come off early against Liverpool with an ankle injury.

Anderlecht v Tottenham Hotspur Head to Head Statistics:

The two clubs have met three times in the past with the first of the two being way back in 1984. It was in the Europa Cup Final in which after two lots of 90 minutes the end had to be settled by penalties at White Hart Lane. Luckily for Tottenham Hotspurs the game ended in their favour. For some reason I can only find one game played in the 2007 campaign, in which the two met this time in the group stages which once again ended one goal a piece. Only Spurs have had the pleasure of a win, even though this was with a penalty shoot out.

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

In the three games these two sides have met, we have only seen a total of six goals scored. This is of course going to give us a goals per game average of two and could be a solid selection for this Thursdays game in Belgium. It’s a tough one though, because one moment Spurs are scoring for fun, while Anderlecht struggled. But looking at the last game played it is the complete opposite! So lets play safe and go for the below selection.

Anderlecht: W D  L W W

Tottenham Hotspur: D D D W L

Looking at the above table we can see it is exactly the same but with the results all over the place. Anderlecht finally got back to winning ways after a couple of blips, where as Tottenham Hotspurs have only managed to draw in recent weeks. Spurs are the bookmakers favourites for the win on Thursday so would be my selection also.

Anderlecht v Tottenham Hotspur Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

Europa League Group J action on Thursday night can be seen live on BT Sports Europa and also viewed in High Definition and Ultra HD. The game features Belgian side Anderlecht verses English hopefuls Tottenham Hotspurs who have been set as the bookmakers favourites for the win. In the past these two have only seen 1 – 1 draws, even though there have only been three previous fixtures leading back to the 1987 Europa Cup Final. Spurs won that final via penalties on the night, in which we see club legends such as Gary Mabbutt featuring over the two legs. Although Tottenham Hotspurs lifting the trophy, it was that year that Anderlecht were later banned for a year due to match fixing as they progressed to the final having beaten Nottingham Forest in the semi final 3 – 2 via foul play.

Both teams are doing very different in all competitions with Tottenham Hotspurs doing better in the Europa League and currently leading the group, yet Anderlecht are not at all doing well yet their domestic campaign see’s them just one point off the top with them currently in third. Spurs are hit and miss right now in the Premiership, having one week smashed current leaders Manchester City 4 – 1, only to then struggle away from home against Swansea City. The goalless draw was a good point earned against Liverpool, although they were at home so could of been seen to do slightly better.

Thursday night predictions are tending to lean towards a draw after looking at previous results, but we do also need to consider that these previous results are a very distant memory with being eight years ago, and then eighteen years before that. i am favouring a draw of some kind and was fancying a bet of both teams to score. Yet the odds on that are terrible so now shying away from that selection. So what I am going for is just a simple draw, as the odds are not that different of both teams to score and draw. The next I am going for is a correct score of Tottenham Hotspurs to win 1 – 0 on the night, giving them an even better chance of qualifying and keeping them top of the group.
