Aston Villa v Birmingham City Preview , Capital One Cup, Tuesday 22nd September 2015

Familiar times for Aston Villa with them once again struggling at the bottom of the Premiership table. Things started well with a 1 – 0 win over newly promoted Bournemouth, but since then the club have returned to their usual ways and drawn against Sunderland and also lost the other four games. The only other game Aston Villa have won this season was in the Capital One Cup second round against Notts County, but even then struggled as they had to take the lower league club to extra time with the game eventually ending 5 – 3 in Villa’s favour. Although Aston Villa are at home Tuesday night, I personally would still fancy the Championship club winning come the end of ninety minutes.

Birmingham City have been far better this season than the previous, with the club currently sitting in seventh with twelve points from a maximum of twenty four. That said however they are still a hefty eight points adrift current league leaders Brighton & Hove Albion. They have currently won and drawn on three occasions while only losing the once, which was very recently at home against Nottingham Forest. Although Birmingham City are away from home on Tuesday, they will still be excited about potentially beating their local rivals in a third round cup game. After the capital Cup game on Tuesday we do see that Birmingham City have a few hard matches coming up with Brentford, Leeds United and Queens Park Rangers the opponents. With only one game at home I do wonder how many points they can take in the next couple of weeks.

Aston Villa Team News:

Tim Sherwood has a number of injuries to deal with right now with five players currently missing or doubtful for this midweek game. Idrissa Gueye is unlikely to be selected this week as he recovers from a hamstring issue, while Adama Traore (calf) is also a doubt. Jose Crespo Rincon is currently nursing his groin strain while Gary Gardner also has an ankle injury. The pair should be returning come the end of this month however, although Jores Okore (knee) is less unfortunate and is out until late October.

Birmingham City Team News:

The only Birmingham City first team player that has been confirmed out of the game is Neal Eardley as he recovers from a dislocated shoulder, and the player could be out for around six weeks in total. Manager Gary Rowett would usually use the Capital One Cup to give some first team players needing games some playing time, but because it is Aston Villa he feels that makes it impossible with their opponents being bitter rivals.

Aston Villa v Birmingham City Preview  Head to Head Statistics:

The two clubs have not met for a few years now with the last time being way back in 2011 when Birmingham City graced the Premier League. In the last five head to head encounters Aston Villa are out on top with two wins, two draws and a loss in the Capital One Cup back in 2010. In total they have played 99 derby matches with Aston Villa just in front with 39 wins and 33 loses. Leaving 27 games finishing as draws of some sort.

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

In these 99 games played against each other we have seen a total of 276 goals scored, this is going to give us an average of 2.8 goals per game, which we can see has only happened the once in their last five encounters, I am going to go for the below selection for Tuesdays game, as I feel it has a far better chance of coming in.

Aston Villa: L L D W L

Birmingham City: D L W W W

Although Championship club Birmingham City are a division lower, they are certainly a team in far better form here having won three out of their last five fixtures in all competitions. Where as Aston Villa have struggled ever since their opening win against Bournemouth back in the early August.

Aston Villa v Birmingham City Match Betting Odds Market

Aston Villa are once again really struggling for winning for and it comes as no surprise after their poor performances last season. The bookmakers may of made the home side favourites, yet the odds just who how confident they are of the home win. Aston Villa v Birmingham City Match Predictions, Banker Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets

Capital Cup third round action this week can be viewed live on Sky Sports 1 High Definition and features home side Aston Villa up against their Championship rivals Birmingham City. The later are in far better form right now and currently sit seventh in the Championship table, not too far off Aston Villa who sit close to the bottom of England’s top league. Aston Villa will seriously need to improve as they could very well be joining Birmingham City in the Championship, something I predicted could very well of happened last season.

Birmingham City as stated, have been in far better form this season and currently sit in seventh position, eight points off current league leaders Brighton & Hove Albion. Aston Villa I am tipping to be relegated this season, something I also predicted could happen last season, although they may of only just missed the drop, I doubt they can do it once again this season. Birmingham City on promotion however is something I feel the club are still a way off from, but crazier things have happened in this division, just look at Bournemouth’s rise to the big league.

My predictions for this game does not back Aston Villa for the win, as I also feel the bookmakers are not completely confident on the result either with the odds currently positive. I feel we are either looking at a draw of some kind, or for the away win which will certainly bring some excitement to the midlands. The first prediction I am going for is a correct score line of 1 – 1, as with looking at the previous five head to head games we don’t exactly see many goals being scored. The other I am going for is a straight forward Birmingham City to win, which is currently showing some nice odds.
