Hungary v Portugal Preview, Euro 2016 Finals, Group F, Wednesday 22nd June 2016.

Exciting times as we head into the last games of the group stages of the European Championships. Surprisingly so for Group F is that Hungary are currently the group leaders with four points, while the likes of Portugal have struggled and have yet to win a game. We do know that come Wednesday any of the four teams in Group F could face England in the knockout stages as Roy Hodgson’s side play whoever ends up in second place.

Hungary have done well so far having beaten Austria 2 – 0 in their opening game of the competition. They were then made to worry having gone one nil down in the first half to Iceland via a penalty kick. It was only until the 88th minute Hungary equalized via an Iceland own goal earning them a point. Hungary are classed as the underdogs to win this game and if they do lose could finish as low as third depending on how the other game goes.

Portugal have been a huge disappointment so far and will know only a win will do to win this group and redeem themselves. A draw is not enough to see them move into the knockout stages with other teams in the competition earning more points and potentially finishing in third position. A win could still however see Portugal finish in second place, which would of course depend on Iceland verses Austria with Iceland needing a solid win.

Things could of been better if national hero Cristiano Ronaldo converted his penalty chance, it could of meant Portugal could of done enough with just a draw against Hungary, yet sadly for them its no longer the case. I can’t deny the fact I did expect more of Portugal in this competition, with some of the talents they possess within their squad.

Hungary Team News:

Bernd Storck is sweating on the fitness of Gergo Lovrencsics who has played well so far this competition. The Hungary manager will also be hoping right back Attila Fiola is available again with him having to drop him to the substitutes bench in the 1 – 1 draw against Iceland.

Portugal Team News:

Portugal manager Santos will be hoping his midfielder Danilo will be fit, after the Porto player missed the game against Austria with a back problem. We could also see the manager select winger Ricardo Quaresma who started in that game. Cristiano Ronaldo will want to put his penalty miss behind him and find whatever is missing to help his side beat Hungary Wednesday night.

Hungary v Portugal Head to Head Statistics:

In the last five games featured against each other we have seen Portugal dominate with five easy wins. In total they have met on ten occasions and Portugal have yet to lose a game against their opponents, not only that they have won the last seven games with the first three meetings all ending in draws.

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

In the last five games played there has been fifteen goals scored which is going to give us a solid goals per game average of three and I personally am hoping for much of the same Wednesday night when these two nations meet for the eleventh time in history. Portugal are of course the favourites, but unless they find their shooting boots I am unsure on the number of goals scored on the night.

Portugal: W D W W W

Although it is Portugal who have the slightly better form on paper it is in fact Hungary who are doing the better in this competition with them sitting top of the pile currently. It could be different on Wednesday night however with it still possible for any of the teams in this group able to finish first or second.

Hungary v Portugal Match Betting Odds Market

Hungary are not being given much chance of beating Portugal on Wednesday night even though it is them who are in the better position currently in Group F. Hungary v Portugal Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

The last games of Group F are to be played Wednesday night with any of the four nations potentially having a meeting with England in the knockout stages. Either of the four teams could finish first although Austria would need a massive win with plenty of goals to by pass Portugal if they win. It could all come down to goal difference on the night although it is Portugal who are favourites to win on Wednesday and win the group.

It would be Portugal’s first win of the competition with them so far being a disappointment having drawn against Iceland and then a goalless effort against Austria more recently. It really was a poor effort so far by a side you’d come to expect to be challenging right up until the semi-finals maybe. With the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo leading the teams attacking line up you’d come to expect plenty of goals from the nations leading goalscorer.

Hungary themselves have surprised most and could still finish top of the group table and earn the easier tie in the next round. If they do lose against Portugal which is to be expected, then it could be them who face England in the knock out stages with Roy Hodgson’s side coming in second behind Wales of all teams. Hungary have so far beaten Austria and drawn against Iceland yet are not considered to be able to earn a win come Wednesday night.

My predictions for this game is to follow what everyone else is expecting with Portugal to win. Yet how they will do so is what I am thinking about here. So for my banker I am going to go for Portugal to win to nil on the night, as I think Hungary will struggle to score against this Portuguese defense. I am thinking it will only be a 1 – 0 win however so plan to take this as my second option with it currently given some good odds right now.
