Real Madrid v Atletico Madrid Preview, Champions League, Wednesday 22nd April

Real Madrid were favourites to come out as winner during the first leg away from home yet failed to make much of an impression with the game ending goalless on the night. Now they are at home for the second leg the pressure is on, especially as Real Madrid haven’t beaten their rivals since last seasons Champions League competition. Now that may not sound that bad, but please consider that since then they have played each other a further seven times while drawing three times and losing the other four occasions. A feat that is seen as rather strange considering Real Madrid dominate most opponents.

Atletico Madrid will fancy their chances on Wednesday night when these two meet, as in the last eight meetings they have won on four occasions with one of these away from home. Two of the three draws were also at the Bernabeu so the club will feel confident of grabbing a result. They will however need to play at their best as this season hasn’t been as successful as last, even though the club are in a great position in the La Liga. Yet the Champions of last year haven’t been on form like last season, and are currently nine points adrift league leaders Barcelona.

Real Madrid Team News:

Reports about Alvaro Medran being missing are coming in, with the Spaniard being out injured with a broken shin bone. Karim Benzema was also out with a knee problem, although I have read the French striker has returned to training so could be available for selection this Wednesday.

Atletico Madrid Team News:

Mario Suarez (hamstring) and Mario Mandzukic (unknown) are being reported as injured previously, yet I cannot find any news on if they have returned to action or not. Antoine Griezmann has been a man on fire lately and in his last five games has scored on six occasions. The striker has scored twenty league goals all season.

Real Madrid v Atletico Madrid Head to Head Statistics

In the last five head to head encounters between these local rivals has seen Atletico Madrid come out on top with three wins and a couple of draws. In total we have 51 games recorded where previous it has been Real Madrid the more dominant with 30 wins. Atletico Madrid have only won 8 in total, yet it has most been in recent seasons with the club growing in stature.

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

In the 51 games played out between the two clubs we have seen a total of 147 goals scored. Which is going to give us an average of close to 2.9 goals per game. It is however always hit and miss between these two sides, so a goals stat betting option I would tend to shy away from. If I was to select one however, I would go for the below option.

Real Madrid v Atletico Madrid Form (Left to Right)

Real Madrid: W D W W W

Atletico Madrid: W D D W W

Although both clubs are in great form right now, you would have to stick with the home side Real Madrid here who have been pretty dominant all season long. They are also the favourites on the night, even though they haven’t beaten their rivals in their last seven encounters.

Bayern Munich v Porto Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

Champions League action this Wednesday night looks set to be an exciting one on Sky Sports 5 High Definition. We see Atletico Madrid travel across town to their closest rivals Real Madrid where the two get to meet once again at the famous Bernabeu. Real Madrid’s last win against Atletico Madrid was only last year, yet that was an incredible eight games ago and since then have lost on four occasions and drawn the three.

Both clubs are in great form although it has to be noted that Atletico Madrid are not as good as they were last season when they managed to win the La Liga title. Real Madrid had led for a bit this season, but a drop in points has allowed Barcelona to take over as the front runners and now currently lead the division by two points. They do not have Barcelona any more this season, unlike last year when the league could of been won or lost in the last couple of games.

My predictions for this Spanish giants meeting will see Real Madrid continue into the semi finals, as surely a win against their rivals is due and they do also have the home advantage. The other will be for a correct score draw of 2 – 2 on the night, a result seen as high scoring yet is more than achievable once a goal or two start hitting the nets. The first will be for the fans enemy Gareth Bale to score and for Real Madrid to win on the night, something hopefully will allow the Welsh star to get the teams fans off his back, as the Welshman is clearly being made the teams scape goat regardless of what the boy does for the club.
