Atletico Madrid v Chelsea Preview, Champions League, Tuesday 22nd April 2014

What a season it has been for Atletico Madrid, not only have they reached their first appearance at this semi-final stage of the UEFA Champions League since 1973/74, they are also flying high at the top of the Spanish Primera La Liga with a 4pt lead over Barcelona.

Not many people would of imagined that Diego Simeone’s side would reach this far of the tournament let alone be in with a major chance of securing what would be an historic double for the club by winning the Champions League and Primera La Liga and obviously the players and fans are very excited as to what the next few weeks will have in store.

Chelsea are also still in with a chance of securing a famous double by winning the Champions League and Premiership, but having been defeated over the weekend at home to bottom of the table Sunderland that now looks like being a pipe dream at best as they currently trail current Premiership leaders Liverpool by 5pts.

The 1-2 loss against Sunderland at Stamford Bridge on Saturday became the first defeat that manager Jose Mourinho had suffered as manager of the club and he will no doubt of made his feelings very clear about the result in the after match chat in the dressing room and now has a huge task in being able to rally his players for this important game on Tuesday night.

Atletico Madrid Team News:

Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has almost a full squad to choose his starting lineup for this game with the only casualty being Defender Javier Manquillo who remains unavailable due to injury. Diego Costa and David Villa will most likely spearhead the attack up front for this game and with a combined tally of 40 goals between them so far this season, they look certain to keep the Chelsea defence extremely busy.

Chelsea Team News:

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho also have pretty much a full squad to choose his starting lineup from, but will be without inspirational play-maker Eden Hazard who is out suffering from a calf injury. Petr Cech missed the 1-2 defeat over the weekend due to illness, but is expected to take his place back between the sticks for this game.

I am expecting Jose Mourinho to go with just one striker up front for this game, but with all three of his main strikers having been disappointing at best this season it really is anyone’s guess who he decides to go with on Tuesday night.

Atletico Madrid v Chelsea Head to Head Statistics

Tuesday night’s game from the Estadio Vicente Calderon will become only the 4th meeting between these two clubs over the years and as we can see in the head to head statistics table shown below, there really is nothing to separate them with both clubs having recorded 1 victory each and the other finishing all square.

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

Not a great deal of information to from here, but from the previous 3 matches played between the two clubs, there has been a total of 13 Goals scored, which generates us an average goals per game statistic of 4.33 which strongly indicates that this game on Tuesday night should see plenty of goals scored.

Atletico Madrid v Chelsea Recent Form (Left to Right)

Atletico Madrid: D W W W W

Chelsea: L W W W L

Atletico Madrid have a clear advantage on the recent form statistics having managed to remain unbeaten during their previous 5 matches of which they have won 4 and drawn 1.

Chelsea have suffered 2 defeats during their previous 5 matches of which they have won the other 3, but you would think that the players will still be in shock from their defeat against relegation candidates Sunderland over the weekend.

Atletico Madrid v Chelsea Match Betting Odds Market

Atletico Madrid have the all important home advantage for this first leg affair and will want to take a comfortable lead over to Stamford Bridge for the second leg next week. The online bookmakers seem to think that this is pretty much forgone conclusion as they have Diego Simeone’s side priced up as the clear favourites to win this game and are currently best odds of EVS with Betfred (£10 Free Bets, No Deposit for New Customers Registering an Account).

The Draw would certainly be a result that Chelsea would take from this game, but I can’t really see this happening as with the attacking power that Atletico Madrid have available in their squad, I would expect them to win this game and I can’t see much interest from the punters having this game down to finish in draw which is currently a best price of 23/10 with Coral (Deposit £5 & Receive £20 Free Bets for New Customers Registering an Account).

Chelsea would have to play the game of their lives to win this game in my opinion and with none of their strikers really having got the job done so far this season it doesn’t come as much of a surprise to see the online bookmakers offering up a best price of 17/5 with BetVictor (£25 Free Bets for New Customers Registering an Account) as it really does reflect their chances in this game.

Atletico Madrid v Chelsea Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

Atletico Madrid have remained unbeaten at home in both the Primera La Liga and UEFA Champions League this season and for me that record should still be in tact after this game on Tuesday night.

Chelsea don’t have the necessary fire-power up front to win this game in my honest opinion, although with Fernando Torres maybe having a last chance to impress Spain manager Vicente del Bosque for his ticket on the plane to the World Cup this summer, we might just see some sort of miracle performance by the 30 year old flop.

However, this does seem a very unlikely event as it is still unclear whether or not Jose Mourinho will put his faith in Torres to lead the attack up front on Tuesday night.

Atletico Madrid do have the required fire-power in their squad though and with both Diego Costa and David Villa having had no problems scoring goals this season, I am quite confident that Atletico Madrid will be the ones celebrating the victory by having won this game and with it put themselves in pole position to reach the final.

The average goals per game statistics are suggesting this game to see plenty of goals and although this could happen, I would expect Atletico Madrid to defend in large numbers once they have taken the lead, so I would image that this game would only see between 2 or 3 goals at best on Tuesday night.

My Banker prediction for this game is going to be Atletico Madrid to Win as for me their squad has the players up front that can score goals where as Chelsea don’t and my Saver for this match is going to be Total Match Goals 2 or 3 as I can certainly see this game finishing 2-0 or 2-1 on the night.
