Middlesbrough v Leeds United Preview, Championship, Saturday 22nd February 2014

Middlesbrough do not look like the team who played in the Premiership so many years ago and have since then continued to be a mid table side in the Championship. Currently in 14th position and elven points from the play-off positions you have to question if they do have what it takes to climb the table. With the current four who occupy those play-off positions you can’t help but compare the quality of each of the sides to this current Middlesbrough club.

Leeds United are another club who continue to disappoint again and again and continue to be a team who play with little to no consistency. Themselves are only eight points from Reading who occupy 6th position and a play-off position but to be brutally honest I just can’t see them making up that lost ground and compete. If they did manage it and were a shock promotion into the big league you could imagine them heading straight back down the season after.

Middlesbrough v Leeds United Team News

Middlesbrough Team News:

Middlesbrough haven’t scored a goal since the 18th January which is really denting their chances of rising up the Championship right now. Granted they have only conceded three times in the last five games with there being three scoreless draws to count in there. The clubs current top scorer is the midfielder  Adomah who is currently on nine goals in twenty eight games. Middlesbrough do have strikers who have scored this year with Mustapha Carayol currently on 7 goals so far.

Leeds United Team News:

Leeds Uniteds enemy once more is consistency with one moment scoring five times in a game and then struggling to even grab one a game. Their captain Ross McCormack was the subject of a bid from West Ham in the January transfer window but was quickly turned down as it didn’t meet the clubs valuation of the player. Ross has currently netted twenty two times in thirty games for the club which is an incredible achievement.

Middlesbrough v Leeds United Head to Head Statistics

Leeds United win the battle of the last 5 head to head statistics but if we look deeper in the 61 games played in total we have seen both sides win 22 games each and then drawing 17. Leeds United have won 7 times away from home but also drawn 11 so we can see that of course have what it takes to come away with a point or three on Saturday.

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

In these 61 games played we have seen a total of 175 goals scored which is giving us an average of 2.86 goals per game which should indicate we see at least a couple to three goals hit the nets on Saturday lunchtime. In Leeds Uniteds total of 91 goals scored they have however only hit the net 29 times away from home which is something to consider.

Middlesbrough v Leeds United Recent Form (Left to Right)

Middlesbrough: L D D D L

Leeds United: L W W D L

Neither side are currently making waves in the Championship this year and if anything should start worrying about putting together some consistent performances and start picking up some much needed wins. We do see Leeds United here the better side in form with winning and losing twice and then a single draw to make up the last five.

Middlesbrough v Leeds United Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

With all of the above information taking into account its going to be a tough one to predict for this Saturdays lunchtime kick off. With both clubs major under achieving  and with Leeds Uniteds supreme inconsistency you just couldn’t guess which way this will go. One thing Middlesbrough do have is a good defence when Jonathan Woodgate is able to play but with the England veteran being so injury prone you cannot be sure the ex international will feature or not.

With only three goals conceded in the last five games and with Leeds poor record away from home to Middlesbrough you cannot help but wonder if Leeds do manage to score on Saturday. If they do then it can surely only come from Ross McCormack or a set piece. Middlesbrough themselves haven’t scored this month with the last goal coming back in January when they beat Charlton Athletic 1 – 0.

So lets get down to some predictions, can Middlesbrough break they goalless drought and walk away with more than a point on Saturday I am not totally convinced. But can Leeds United better their away record here at the Riverside Stadium? Middlesbrough have seen far too many goalless draws this month and I am not sure they will see another so plan to go with a 1 – 0 win either way. For Leeds to win 1 – 0 and Ross McCormack to score is my first and then the other is for Middlesbrough to win.
