Manchester United v Sunderland Preview, League Cup, Wednesday 22nd January 2014

Manchester United suffered yet another defeat over the weekend in the league when losing 3-1 away against Chelsea and although it seems that manager David Moyes still has the full support of the board and chairman, the fans are far from happy.

Sunderland fought back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 in their league game over the weekend at home against Southampton and although they still occupy bottom of the league table all the players will see this as a game they can win having already beaten United 2-1 at the Stadium of Light last week.

Manchester United Team News:

Fellaini, Nani, Wayne Rooney and Robin Van Persie are all unavailable for this game as they receive treatment for respective injury problems. Rio Ferdinand is still struggling with a knee problem and looks unlikely to feature also but Hernandez could be handed a start having impressed and scored United’s goals in that 3-1 defeat against Chelsea over the weekend.

Sunderland Team News:

Keiren Westwood and Carlos Cuéllar are the only two players unavailable for Sunderland as they both continue to recover from respective injury problems. Other than that manager Gus Poyet has a full squad to choose his starting line up for this game which should be very similar to the one that beat United last week in the 1st Leg at the Stadium of Light.

Manchester United v Sunderland Head to Head Statistics:

Wednesday night’s game from Old Trafford Stadium will become the 117th meeting between the two clubs over the years of which Manchester United have won 55 (34 at Old Trafford Stadium) with Sunderland having won 34 (9 at Old Trafford Stadium) and the remaining 27 matches having finished all square (14 at Old Trafford Stadium).

The last 5 meetings between the two clubs in our head to head statistics table below, shows Manchester United having dominated proceedings having won 4 of the 5 games played with Sunderland having only managed a single victory during this time which came at the Stadium of Light the last time the two sides met just over a week ago.

361 Goals have been scored in the previous 116 matches between the two clubs which provides us with an overall goals per game statistic of 3.11 and with 173 goals having been scored at Old Trafford Stadium in the previous 57 matches played we are provided with an average goals per game statistic of 3.03 which suggests that we should see at least a few goals scored in this game on wednesday night.

Manchester United v Sunderland Recent Form (Left to Right)

Manchester United: L L L W L

Sunderland: L W W W D

Sunderland have a clear advantage on the recent form statistics where they have managed to win 3 of their last 5 matches played. Manchester United have struggled and have managed just 1 victory from their last 5 and losing all of the 4 others.

Manchester United v Sunderland Match Betting Odds Market

Manchester United are the clear odds on favourites to win this game despite not having had the best of times of it lately, but their current best price of 4/11 with Paddy Power (£50 Free Bets for New Customers) does look extremely short indeed considering there is no Rooney or Van Persie playing and for me this price offers no value at all.

The Draw would be enough to send Sunderland through to the Final where they would meet Manchester City and having shown tremendous character at the weekend to come back from 2-0 down to rescue a point at 2-2, it could be worth having you saver bet on this game finishing all square at a current best price of 9/2 with Bet365 (£200 Free Bets for New Customers).

Sunderland cause a huge shock last week when beating United 2-1 at the Stadium of Light, but the online bookmakers don’t see any repeat of that happening in this game at Old Trafford on wednesday night and currently have the visitors priced up at huge odds of 9/1 with BetVictor (£25 Free Bets for New Customers) to win this game.

Manchester United v Sunderland Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

If Manchester United were to lose this game then I would expect their fans to put pressure on the board and chairman about the future of David Moyes as this season’s results so far have clearly shown this United side as one of the worst seen for many many years and their defensive display over the weekend in the 3-1 defeat against Chelsea was a comedy of errors.

However, this competition does at least give them a chance to put something in the trophy cabinet this season as it doesn’t look at all likely that they are going to go much further in the Champions League with their recent performances and David Moyes will see this tournament as one that his side can win and more importantly keep him in a job for next season.

Sunderland have the advantage heading into this 2nd leg match at Old Trafford having won the 1st leg last week 2-1 and that result will certainly have provided all the players in the squad with belief that they can win this game on wednesday night and with the way United have been playing this season, it surely wouldn’t come as too much of a surprise to see them go through to the final at Wembley Stadium to meet Manchester City on March 2nd.
