Millwall v Middlesbrough Preview, Championship, Saturday 21st December 2013

Millwall in recent weeks have been hit hard by injuries and manager Steve Lomas was forced to recall Josh Wright from his loan spell with Leyton Orient. Granted he was due back in a couple of weeks but due to the injuries Lomas had little choice but to recall him. Wright only played twice for Orient with both of those coming on as a substitute.

Results have also been mixed due to the state of the team with wins, draws and loses scattered while showing no signs of consistency. This will be an important game for both clubs who only sit one point apart and far too close to the relegation battle that is taking place below them.

Its a shock to see a goalkeeper of Shay Given’s standard be forced to miss 10 months worth of football at Premiership club Aston Villa and was very pleased to head out on loan to Middlesbrough and last month made his loan debut in the game against Bolton Wanderers. Given is only under contract to remain at Middlesbrough until January the 2nd but I am sure he will be keen to extend his stay if he can continue to get games and the buzz that comes with it.

Even more news regarding Given with Martin O’Neill also offering the 37 year old a way back into international football. Talks have yet to go on but after the Republic of Ireland legend made 125 caps for his county I cannot see him refuse if the new manager did come knocking at Given’s door.

Millwall v Middlesbrough Team News

Millwall News:

The Lions are without a fair few of their keys players, with the more recent injury worries being midfielders Lee Martin, Richard Chaplow and Nicky Bailey. This has caused Steve Lomas to recall Josh Wright two weeks early from his loan spell at Leyton Orient where he only played twice as a substitute. Millwall will also be without Karleigh Osborne who is serving a suspension.

Middlesbrough News

Middlesbrough boss Aitor Karanka is likely to be missing the 33 year old center back Jonathan Woodgate for the match against Millwall on Saturday after the injury prone defender faced yet another setback. Woodgate has played a huge part in Karanka’s side this season and will sorely be missed, but they do have options with Ben Gibson having already filled in for Woodgate and will likely get the nod to play.

Millwall v Middlesbrough Head to Head Statistics

Last season we see Millwall walk away with both results but when looking at the 13 games played in the past the results are very even with 5 wins each and 3 draws. Both sides have won 3 at home and 2 away so could see Saturdays game going either way as it all depends on who is the team in form on the day.

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

In the 13 games we have records for we have a total of 41 goals scored which would give us an average of 3.15 goals per game. Which shows we should see a few goals scored on Saturday by either side. In recent years it is very close to 4 goals per game by is in fact 3.6 in the last 5 head to head statistics.

Millwall v Middlesbrough Recent Form (Left to Right)

Millwall: L W D L W

Middlesbrough: L D L W L

Its hard to pick a team who is in better form right now as the two clubs sit next to each other close to the relegation zone. But with the form chart above we can actually see Millwall are the team with a better run of results in recent weeks so would surely have the advantage here while also adding the fact that they are at home.

Millwall v Middlesbrough Match Betting Odds Market.

Millwall are given the nod here in regards to who is the games favourite to win the match. This will be due to them playing at home and also being in slightly better form coming into this match. Bookmakers have set the best odds found here @ 9/5 with BetVictor – £25 Free Bets For New Customers Registering an Account.

The Draw is certainly a good choice with both teams scrapping it out as they bid to get away from the dreaded relegation battle going on just below them. With the best odds coming in @ 12/5 with Ladbrokes – £50 Free Bets when Registering a New Account.

Middlesbrough are in with a shot of winning this game as they have proven to do it in the past away from home at The Den. But with injury issues in defence bookmakers are setting the odds with the best found @ 17/10 with BetVictor – £25 Free Bets For New Customers Registering an Account.

Millwall v Middlesbrough Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

To be honest this game could go either way, it is always a great spectacle when watching two teams struggling close to the relegation zone, because you just don’t know which way the game can go as both desperately throw everything at each other just to get the 3 points. Middlesbrough are 1 point behind Millwall coming into this game and have a great defensive record so far in the Championship which is why it is quite surprising seeing them so far down the table in 19th position.

Millwall however are leaking a lot of goals with a -15 goal difference which could be taking advantage of by strike oair Carayol and Kamara who both have 4 goals each. Yet it is midfielder Adomah who is the sides top scorer with 7 goals in 19 games so could be worth putting a bet on him to score. But in all honesty do we see Middlesbrough winning this game? Sadly they are likely to still be missing the defensive rock that Woodgate is and although they have a few replacement options they are not as good as the ex England international.

So my first prediction comes for both teams to score and for Millwall to win the game, this is purely down to Millwall being in better form recently and due to the fact Middlesbrough are very likely to be missing Woodgate who has been a huge part in their defense this season. The other prediction I am feeling right now is for Middlesbrough midfielder and top scorer Albert Adomah to score ANYTIME during the match which could come in with the way he is playing right now.
