West Ham United v Sunderland Preview, Premiership, Saturday 21st March 2015.

West Ham United have taken a tumble from the top four and now dropped as low as tenth in the Premiership. Now any other season this would be an expected position for the East End club, yet most of this season they have been punching way above their weight with them being one of the top five for a majority of last year. In their last five games however we can see things dramatically deteriorating with them losing four and drawing the once against Tottenham Hotspurs. One of those loses was in the FA Cup 5th round where they were humiliated 4 – 0 by West Bromwich Albion. We must also consider that they have played and lost to Chelsea and Arsenal, yet should of done better at home to Crystal Palace who walked away with a 3 – 1 victory.

Sunderland this week see the dismissal of manager Gus Poyet after the destructive powers of Aston Villa turned Sunderland inside and out with a 4 – 0 win at The Stadium of Light. Aston Villa scored the same amount of goals during this away fixture as to what they have scored so far on their travels all season and the result actually see the two sides swap places in the table down in sixteenth and seventeenth. Sunderland are now just one point adrift of Burnley who run out winners against champions Manchester City last weekend, and depending on results this weekend we could see Sunderland once again in relegation trouble, much like what we see last season and no doubt the season before.

West Ham United Team News:

West Ham Uniteds injury issues have improved slightly with the return of some key players. Yet they are still without influential players such as Enner Valencia (toe) who has played exceptionally well since his signing last summer. James Tomkins is out with a dislocated shoulder whiles strikers Charlton Cole (knock) and And Carroll (knee ligaments) are also both unavailable for selection.

Sunderland Team News:

Sunderland are without manager Gus Poyet who was sacked during the week and will be replaced temporally by their assistant manager. As for injuries we can see William Buckley missing with a knock, while also missing Emanuele Giaccherini who has a bad ankle. Lee Cattermole is serving a suspension after reaching a yellow card limit.

West Ham United v Sunderland Head to Head Statistics:

In the last five head to head encounters we can see it is all evens with both clubs winning once each and drawing the remaining three. In total we have 70 games recorded between the two clubs where Sunderland come out on top with that extra win with 26, thus seeing West Ham United winning 25. Meaning we have 19 games left that all ended in draws.

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

In the 70 games recorded between these two Premiership sides, we have seen a total of 203 goals scored which is going to give us an average of 2.9 goals scored per game. The goalless draw back in 2013 takes this number out slightly, but you could be considering the below option for Saturdays live fixture.

West Ham United v Sunderland Recent Form All Competitions (Left to Right)

West Ham United: L L L D L

Sunderland: L D L D L

Sunderland on paper are the better team in form here which is really bad seeing as though neither teams have managed a single win in their last five fixtures in all competitions. We must consider however that West Ham United have faced both Chelsea and Arsenal, as well as tough opponents Tottenham Hotspurs, so I would still favour the London club for a win here especially as though they are at home.

West Ham United v Sunderland Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

Premier League action this Saturday comes to us Live on Sky Sports 1 High Definition at The Boyeln Ground and features home side West Ham United verses Sunderland. It is a must win game for both clubs I feel, but both for very different reasons. Sunderland will need it to avoid dropping down into the relegation zone which of course does depend on the likes of Burnley who managed to beat Manchester City last weekend. As for West Ham, they will want to win to kick start their current bad form and grab their first win in eight games, their last being that 1 – 0 win over Bristol City in the FA Cup.

Sunderland’s form and prospects of staying up this season took a knock this week when we see the dismissal of manager Gus Poyet. With only nine league games remaining you can only hope the stand in manager can pull off a miracle and steer them away from the drop zone for yet another year. West Ham United are fourteen points off the bottom three so will be safe this season, and it is no more than they deserve after such an impressive first half of the season. Incredibly so the East End club have managed to pull off an unthinkable feat and stayed within the top five for months in a row and were even being considered for some type of European entry. Yet in their last seven matches have continued to go on without a win.

My predictions for Saturdays game will see both teams come out with some form of a result. The first will be for West Ham United to win, and with that I plan to take both teams to score and West Ham to win. The next will be for a correct score guess of 2 – 2 which will be yet again another draw seen. However a draw will not be enough if Burnley manage to win against Southampton away from home. It is seen as unlikely, but then who imagined they would beat Manchester City last weekend?
