Arsenal v Sunderland Preview, Premiership, Wednesday 20th May 2015.

In the last week or so we have seen Arsenal drop slightly in form especially after losing 1 – 0 at home to mid table team Swansea City. They then recently faces a Manchester United side at Old Trafford and spent most of the game behind after an Anders Herrera placed shot. The equaliser was so unlucky for Manchester United who spent at least 75% of the game on top with Arsenal only enjoying short bits of the game on top. It took until eight minutes from time when an off target shot hit young Tyler Blackett and went in and over Victor Valdes who came on for injured David de Gea.

Sunderland much like last year have waited until late in the season to mount their relegation survival challenge, and so far have done an excellent job of it having won twice and drawn twice in their last five fixtures. In their last two games they have to face Arsenal and Chelsea and if anything would ideally require a point to secure their place in next years Premiership fixture list. This fact does also depend on Hull City who must win against Manchester United, something Steve Bruce has failed to do in seventeen years. It does also depend on bitter rivals Newcastle United who are just a point below them and also require a win in their last game.

Arsenal Team News:

Mikel Arteta (ankle) and Mathieu Debuchy (hamstring) are now back in training after both being out since April, while Ryo Miyaichi (hamstring), Abou Diaby (knee) and Danny Welbeck (knee) are close and could return to training any day now. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (hamstring) is out until the end of May and will likely miss the remaining games of Arsenal’s season, including the FA Cup Final against Aston Villa.

Sunderland Team News:

Sunderland have a number of injuries with Jozy Altidore currently missing with an illness. Jack Rodwell (hamstring) and Billy Jones (muscle) should return to training soon while Ricardo Alvarez (knee) is out for the season. We then have Wes Brown (knee) and Jordi Gomez (knee) out until end of May and June.

In these 137 games played out between the two clubs we have seen a total of 407 goals scored, which is going to give us an average of close to 3 goals per game, something that appears to be hit or miss when looking at the last five meetings. Maybe the below option could be the best bet here.

Arsenal: D L W D W

Sunderland: D W W D L

On paper the form table is all square with two wins, two draws and a single loss for both clubs. Yet we must also look at how far apart the two teams are here with Arsenal challenging for second place, while Sunderland fight for their survival to stay in this league. With Arsenal at home they will no doubt be the solid and clear favourites to win.

Arsenal v Sunderland Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

Premiership action this Wednesday can be seen live on Sky Sports 1 High Definition and features Arsenal against Sunderland at the famous Emirates stadium. A win against Sunderland will see Arsenal close the gap on last years champions Manchester City to just two points and it will be down to both sides last game that will flesh out who comes behind Chelsea and takes second position in the table. However a loss for Arsenal could then put them in a position to fight it out with Manchester United for that 3rd or 4th place finish.

Sunderland have waited yet again until the end of the season to turn on the style and show everyone just how good they are at avoid relegation once again. A win or draw for Sunderland will secure their place in next years Premiership, yet a loss could see them in danger, especially if Hull City do manage to beat Manchester United at their home ground. It will also depend on their bitter rivals Newcastle United who are just a point below them and also looking for a win themselves, something they haven’t managed to do with nine loses and a draw in their last ten games.

My predictions for this game will see to it that Arsenal win in some form or fashion, while the other is for Sunderland to scrap it out for a draw and allow them to breath a deep sigh of relief as they avoid the drop. So for the first I am going to go for an Alexis Sanchez goal and for Arsenal to win the game. With the next being a correct score of Arsenal 2 – Sunderland 2, something I am sure you will agree looks far fetched. Yet to me I just have this gut feeling we will see plenty of goals and some poor defending this Wednesday evening.
