Newcastle United v Sunderland Preview, Premiership, Sunday 20th March 2016.

It’s the first of the Premierships epic derby’s on Saturday when Newcastle United face bitter rivals Sunderland in what could be the result that potentially decides both clubs fate in regards to staying in this league. With only a point between the two this is a must win game for home side Newcastle United who currently sit in nineteenth, a relegation position. Now under new management could we see Rafael Benitez turn the club around and save them from the drop?

In the clubs last five Premier League games we have only seen Newcastle United win the one game, which came back in the first week of February. Since then they have lost four including the 5 – 1 humiliation by Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Apart from Southampton and Manchester City we really should see Newcastle pick up some points against Norwich City and Swansea City, as well as Sundays game against Sunderland who they haven’t managed to beat since 2011.

Sunderland are only slightly out of the relegation battle coming into this game yet a loss could see them drop back down as the two swap places. Sunderland can take it into account however that rivals Newcastle United haven’t beaten them since 2011 and even more so 2010 when Newcastle last won at home. In the last six games both home and away Sunderland have won outright which holds major bragging rights between the two clubs fanatic fans.

Although Sunderland have only won the one game in their last five league games played it could be that victory over Manchester United that has helped the club start to pick up points here and there. They did lose the week after to West Ham United yet have since then managed to earn good draws against Crystal Palace and Southampton. In the next five games Arsenal and Leicester City will be tough games although West Bromwich Albion and Norwich City should see them potentially pick up points.

Newcastle United Team News:

With club captain Fabricio Coloccini a doubt due to a calf strain it is good news for Newcastle who welcome back fellow defender Chancel Mbemba after recovering from an ankle injury. Steven Taylor is still unavailable with a knock while Tim Krul (knee), Paul Dummett (hamstring), Massadio Haidara (knee) and Kevin Mbabu (thigh) are all still missing. Striker Papiss Cisse however has returned to training but we are unsure if he is likely to start on Sunday.

Sunderland Team News:

Sunderland have had Jermain Defoe missing yet he is expected to be fit having recovered from a calf strain against Southampton at the beginning of March. The club do see Lee Cattermole return after concussion while also have Jeremain Lens back available having recovered from a hernia operation. Duncan Watmore (ankle ligaments) and Emmanuel Eboue (hamstring) are currently out of action.

Newcastle United v Sunderland Head to Head Statistics:

In the last six games played we have seen the tables turned between the two bitter rivals, much to the heartbreak of Newcastle United fans who haven’t witnessed a win since 2011 against Sunderland. With the last six seeing Sunderland win, the two before that were draws which see’s Sunderland as the clear dominant side here, even though both clubs are struggling for survival this season. The two have met 119 times in which Newcastle United come out on top with 44 wins and 40 loses, leaving 35 games ending as draws.

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

In these 119 games played out over the years we have seen a total of 367 goals scored. This is going to give us a goals per game average of 3 which has been seen three times in the last five games played. It is always a good option when these two meet so I plan to take the below option for Sundays Tyne Side derby match.

Neither of these two clubs have much to shout about this season as both struggle to stay in this league come the end of the season. many are saying new manager Raphael Benitez will save Newcastle from the drop and even be at the expense of bitter rivals Sunderland. Yet the form suggests otherwise as Sunderland are at least picking up points here and there.

Newcastle United v Sunderland Match Predictions, Banker Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets

Premier League action this Sunday lunchtime comes live via Sky Sports 1 and of course in the glorious High Definition. Where we witness the first of the two derby games this weekend with Tyneside rivals Newcastle United and Sunderland once again locking horns. Newcastle United have spent so many years being the better side out of the two yet in the last five years have failed to record any wins against Sunderland. Where if anything the tables have turned with Sunderland winning the last six games played out.

Newcastle United are in serious danger of being relegated this season and a lot falls onto new manager Raphael Benitez who many hope can turn the clubs season around and keep them in the Premiership. With Swansea City nine points ahead of Newcastle United I can only imagine it will be either of the two clubs facing the drop come the end of the season, and to be honest it has been coming for a few years with both often struggling close to the bottom.

Sunderland themselves may of won their last six games against bitter rivals Newcastle, but can they make it a seventh this Sunday? The Sunderland win would spell disaster for Newcastle United, yet I can’t see Sunderland or its fans losing any sleep at night if that does happen. Sunderland have had the better results of late, even though if it is three draws and a win against Manchester United. It still means they are now out of the relegation positions even if it is just by one point!

This is a must win game for both clubs to be honest with neither of the two clubs wanting to go down come the end of the season, and although the home side are favourites could they really turn their season around now so late on? Who knows, but what I do know is that this game and the Manchester derby looks set to be a very exciting Sunday with lots of potential upset up on offer.

My predictions for Sunday lunchtimes game does fancy that of Newcastle United earning a win, although I am wondering of it will be a narrow victory or a humiliated with plenty of goals? So for safety reasons only I plan to just take the basic Newcastle United win as my banker option. The next of my predictions I am going for is for both teams to score during the match and for the game to end as a draw. Which will not be a good result for either sides as they look to put distance between themselves.
