Liverpool v Chelsea Preview, League Cup, Semi Final 1st Leg, Tuesday 20th January 2015

Liverpool had a very disappointing start to the season and were in the bottom half of the table at Christmas, since then they have climbed up the table and are now just 5 points behind Manchester United who occupy the 4th and final Champions League place. Brendan Rodgers’ side are undefeated in their last 8 matches and will be keen to continue that streak when they welcome Chelsea to Anfield on Tuesday Night. This competition is Liverpool’s best chance of Silverware this season so I expect them to not take it lightly and field a full strength side.

Chelsea have won their last three on the bounce and look back to their best with Diego Costa in fine scoring form and Cesc Fabregas finding his passing game once again. The blues are 5 points clear at the top of the league but that doesn’t mean Jose Mourinho will rest his players for this encounter, he will want to win this competition as much as he wants to win the Champions League and therefore I expect him to play a strong team in attempt to take an advantage back to Stamford Bridge for the 2nd leg on the 27th of January.

Liverpool Team News:

Captain Steven Gerrard returns to the squad along with Glen Johnson and Mario Balotelli who all missed Liverpool’s trip to Villa Park on the weekend. Daniel Sturridge will return at the end of the month at long last. Jon Flanagan and Joe Allen are still out and it is unknown when those two players will return.

Chelsea Team News:

Jose Mourinho will be delighted that he has a fully fit squad heading into this difficult game away from home. Didier Drogba is available for selection after his illness that meant he missed the last game and Azpilicueta could replace Filipe Luis in left-back after recovering from his groin injury.

Liverpool v  Chelsea Head to Head Statistics:

In the last five head to head encounters we have seen Chelsea come out on top with three wins and two draws. In total we have 159 games played between these two Premiership clubs where Liverpool have the most wins with 69. Chelsea however are starting to catch up and now have 55 victories to their name. We also have the remaining 35 games ending as draws.

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

In the 159 games played against each other in the past we have seen a total of 458 goals scored. This provides us with an average of 2.88 goals per game. When the two teams have met at Anfield we have seen 238 goals in 78 matches played which generates us an average of 3.05 goals per game.

Both sets of data seem to strongly indicate that we should see a minimum of 3 Goals scored in this game on Tuesday Night.

Liverpool v Chelsea Recent Form All Competitions (Left to Right)

Liverpool: W W W D W

Chelsea: W W W L D

Neither side has any significant advantage on the recent form statistics heading into this game as both have only managed to secure just 2 victories from their last 5 matches played. However, Liverpool have only lost 1 of their last 5, compared to Swansea City having lost 3 of their last 5, so Liverpool would seem to get the nod overall.

Liverpool v helsea Match Betting Odds Market

Liverpool are the underdogs heading into this match up despite being the home team. I think the online bookmakers have priced them fairly considering they have failed to pick up a win against Chelsea in their previous 5 attempts. Bet365 offer the best price for Liverpool to win @ 13/5 – £200 Matched Bonus Bets for New Customers.

The Draw could be a smart decision for this game as two of the last five clashes between the two teams have ended all square. I think both managers would be pleased with a draw, with that being said I think there will be goals in this game so I suggest covering 1-1 and 2-2 correct scores. BetVictor provide the best value for the draw @ 5/2 – £25 Free Bets for New Customers.

Chelsea are the clear favourites to win this match and it is easy to understand why as they have the best squad in England which is reflected by their league position. Despite being away from the Bridge where they have struggled at times this season I expect them to have enough in their locker to win this one. @ 5/4 it is Coral who have the best price around for Chelsea to win – Deposit £5 & Receive £20 Free Bets for New Customers.

Liverpool v Chelsea Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

Brendan Rogers seems to have secured his job for now after a good string of results recently, but a defeat in this game would highlight the flaws in the Liverpool team and obviously see the manager once again under pressure but without Star Striker Daniel Sturridge I cannot envisage the reds earning anything more than a draw in this game.

Chelsea will be confident going into this game as they have won their last three matches comfortably, scoring 10 goals and conceding none, they are now 5 points top of the Premier League and will get the chance to extend that to 8 when they host Manchester City on the 31st of January so there is plenty to smile about for Jose Mourinho and I am sure his side will get the jjob done over the two legs and reach the Final of the Capital One Cup.

The average goals per game statistics are expecting this match to see a minimum of 3 goals scored and I think that is realistic as I expect Chelsea to score 2 or 3 goals and Liverpool maybe getting 1 in this game.
