Celtic v Malmo Preview, Champions League, Qualification, Wednesday 19th August 2015

Celtic once again live in hope of European glory after now reaching this stage once again. Their opponents Malmo are half way through their domestic season right now so should be a lot more match fit, although Scottish side Celtic are the favourites due to the difference in squad talent. As for Celtic, they so far are doing well in their title defence and currently sit in second position behind main rival challengers Hearts. Celtic however will have plenty of chances to take top of the league, although so early on it can hardly matter with only four games played thus far. In the clubs next five fixtures they do play Malmo twice both home and away, and bookmakers do have them set as favourites to qualify for the group stage of the Champions League.

Malmo were tipped to be knocked out of the competition after losing the first leg away from home to Salzburg 2 – 0. It took an amazing performance at their home ground for the second leg of the knock out stage, where they went three nil up in the first half. Enock Adu was sent off for Malmo half way through the second half which put Malmo under an extreme amount of pressure for close to half hour. They did however hold off Salzburg with some desperate defending and booked their place in the next stage against Scottish Champions Celtic. This will certainly be their toughest challenge yet although is one of the easier draws considering that Manchester United, Monaco, Lazio and Bayer Leverkusen were other potential options.

Celtic Team News:

Minimal costs spent this summer for Celtic, with them spending just over £3 mill right now during this transfer window. Nadir Ciftci and Scott Allan have swapped Scottish clubs to join Celtic while Manchester City’s Dedryck Boyata joined for £1.4 million. Saidy Janko also joins for the red side of Manchester on loan while Logan Bailly signs from OH Leuven.

Malmo Team News:

Sweden’s Malmo have mainly dabbled in the loan market this summer with five players all joining for the majority of the season. FC Augsburg have let Nikola Djurdjic out on loan for a fee of £70k while there are no details on the remaining four players. The club however have sold two and bought in just over £1.1 million in profit. Filip Helander joined Hellas Verona while Robin Olsen left to join PAOK Saloniki.

Celtic v Malmo Head to Head Statistics:

This fixture is the first time these two clubs have met and the favourites set by the bookmakers are Celtic who do have the far better team and more European experience. Celtic will need to put in a good performance and use their subs wisely seeing as though match fitness might still be an issue with their season only four games fresh. Where as Malmo are half way through their domestic league and will be looking to capitalize on that fact.

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

As this is the first time the two clubs have met there will be no goals recorded thus far. However we should expect to see a few goals scored come Tuesday night with the first leg set in Scotland at Celtic’s home ground. I am sure there will still be a few goals scored in the second leg in which Celtic will more likely be favourites once again.

Both teams are in good form right now although Celtic have only just kick started their domestic league campaign. They have also had to go through an extra round of qualifiers in which they won and went through. The above table shows Celtic are only just the better team in regards to form, and they will certainly be the bookmakers favourites for Wednesday nights first leg clash.

Celtic v Malmo Match Predictions, Banker Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets

Champions League action Wednesday night kicks off on BT Sports new channel ‘Europe’. The game sees Scottish champions Celtic take on Sweden’s Malmo FF at Celtic Park in what looks set to be a promising game with the two clubs having never met before. Celtic have started their season reasonably strong although will not be best pleased about drawing to Kilmarnock in the dying minutes when the home side managed to equalize via a spot kick in the 88th minute. The win would of still seen them top of the table, in which Hearts now currently occupy. That said it is still early days and the favourites to retain the title will certainly be Celtic.

Swedish side Malmo were champions of their domestic league last season by a good six points clear, yet this season they currently sit in 5th four points adrift current leaders IFK Goteborg. There is still ten games remaining however so all could change by the end of their season. Malmo have had to so far go through two rounds of qualifying in which the first game they did seem to struggle with a 1 – 0 win on aggregate against Zalgiris. The 3rd round qualifier was also a tough encounter with them losing the away leg 2 – 0 to Salzburg. Luckily for Malmo they pulled it out of the bag in the second leg with a 3 – 0 win at home.

My predictions for Wednesday nights game does back Celtic to win on both counts, as Malmo have struggled all through the qualifying rounds apart from their most recent game. So for the first I am going to go with a correct score of Celtic to win 2 – 0 on the night, which should leave them in a good place for the second leg away from home next week. The next I am going to go for is Leigh Griffiths to be the first goalscorer of the night, and if things go well for the ex Wolves striker he could even get a brace or more.
