Chelsea v FC Basel Preview, Champions League, Wednesday 18th September 2013

Jose Mourinho will want to win this game comfortably to prove they have still got the quality to win the premier league after Saturdays 1-0 loss to Everton at the weekend at Goodison Park Stadium, their attack seems to be missing a finisher and Eto’o is not the answer from what I saw during that game. Chelsea have scored at least 2 in their last 10 home games played in front of their fans at Stamford Bridge and I would be surprised to see that run come to an end on wednesday night.

FC Basel haven’t had the best start to their domestic league, winning just three from seven games played and have drawn all three of their away games. FC Basel got beat 3-1 in this competition last season by Chelsea in the group stage and I wouldn’t be surprised to see a similar result again.

FC Basel will no doubt be looking to return home with at least a draw to stand a chance of progressing through from the group but I don’t see them doing so as Chelsea’s defence is quite solid and they will be coming out to prove a point after last weekend’s defeat, however FC Basel do have a strong possibility of scoring as they have scored in each of their last 19 games and if they did manage to get one, then it would certainly be game on.

Chelsea Team News :

Defender Tomas Kalas is the only player unavailable for manager Jose Mourinho as he continues recover from a fractured tibula, but the main headache for ‘The Special One’ has to be who he chooses to lead the attack up front after seeing Samuel Eto’o have a complete nightmare in the defeat against Everton at the weekend with Demba Ba looking the favourite to be given a chance to impress his manager.

FC Basel Team News :

Coach Murat Yakin has a number of players missing from this squad. Defender Taulant Xhaka is suspended, fellow defender Fabian Ritter, Midfielders Serey Die and Mohamed Elneny are also unavailable as they continue to recover from respective injuries.

Striker Marco Streller will lead the attack up front in what looks likely to be a 4-1-4-1 formation.

Chelsea v FC Basel Head to Head Statistics

02/05/13 UCL Chelsea – Basel 3 : 1
25/04/13 UCL FC Basel – Chelsea 2 : 1

Who Has The Advantage ?

Chelsea has a clear advantage as they have played Basel twice beating them both times. Basel clearly show a threat to goal thought as they have scored in both encounters and usually score against tough opposition but Chelsea’s home advantage may prove too much for them come wednesday night in London.

Average Goals Per Game ?

7 goals have been scored in the previous two games which provides us with an average goal per game statistic of 3.50 which strongly suggests that this game on wednesday night will see at least a few goals find the target.

Chelsea v FC Basel Match Betting Odds Market

Chelsea are the clear odds on favourites with the online bookmakers to win this game which shouldn’t come as much of a surprise and are currently a best price of 1/3 with Sky Bet (£10 Free Bets No Deposit Required for New Customers).

The Draw could see a bit of action from punters as with Chelsea having slipped up at the weekend and finding goals difficult to come by there is a strong possibility that this game could finish all square and is a current best price of 9/2 with Bet365 (£200 Free Bets for New Customers).

FC Basel are not expected to win this game and are a current best price of 11/1 with Betfred (£10 Free Bets No Deposit Required for New Customers) which in my honest opinion looks overpriced considering Chelsea’s recent form.

Chelsea v FC Basel Betting Predictions:

I think the most likely result of this match is 2-0 to Chelsea whilst I think Basel could score which could result in a 2-1 or 3-1 score line come the full time whistle so there could be some value to be had by playing the correct score using a dutching calculator.

Chelsea’s defence has looked solid enough this season and they will be looking for a clean sheet after their defeat at the weekend against Everton, but Basel do have a strong attack and although it will be a difficult match for the visitors they are certainly capable of causing an upset here.

Basel will be hoping to get a point out of this match and I will be extremely shocked if Basel actually won the game along with millions of others, however they will want to give 100% here and show other opposition in the group that they should be worried about playing them and make a statement.
