Belgium v Republic of Ireland Preview, Euro 2016 Finals, Group E, Saturday 18th June 2016.

It’ll be a must win game for the disappointing Belgium who I did expect to do far better against Italy who currently sit top of the group table. The 2 – 0 loss would of hurt their prospects of getting through into the knockout stages unless they can improve massively and win their remaining two games. Realistically they should beat both Sweden and Saturdays opponents the Republic of Ireland so should the nations fans be worried just yet?

Belgium must know however that Saturdays fixture against the Irish wont be an easy walk over, especially with how much pride, belief passion the Republic of Ireland play with when it really matters. A draw for the Belgians could mean an early plane home even if they do beat Sweden in their final EURO 16 fixture. Lets not get carried away just yet however, as Belgium were one of the favourites to win this years competition taking the crown from Spain.

The Republic of Ireland were doing well against Sweden and having taken the lead just before half time did look good to continue and potentially beat the Swedes. Half way into the second half however mistakes were to be made and sadly Ciaran Clark slotted a goal into his own net undoing the opening goal scored by Wes Hoolahan. It wasn’t a complete loss though as a point is better than a loss but many are saying can the Irish add to their tally and progress into the next stage.

As I said the way both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland play we should see a lot of passion going into their football throughout this tournament as having either of the two in a competition always proves that the small island produces some of the most amazing fans ever seen on this planet, and its great to see in any competition when random countries comment on who they enjoyed playing the most when looking at the fans that travel to these games.

Belgium Team News:

Belgium will be keen to get over the loss against Italy in their opening game and although Chelsea and Manchester City midfielders Eden Hazard and Kevin de Bruyne picked up minor injuries they should still be fit by Saturday lunchtime when these two kick-off. We could see a different lineup in the attacking department for Belgium however, especially as the last game didn’t provide much options to break down an aging Italian side.

Republic of Ireland Team News:

Sadly for the Republic of Ireland they are still without striker Jonathan Walters who continues his recovery from an Achilles injury he got before the competition. I am surprised they bought him to France especially as he wasn’t even deemed fit to begin with. It is the only issue the Irish have for this game and we could see pretty much the same side feature against Belgium as seen previously in the Sweden game.

Belgium v Republic of Ireland Head to Head Statistics:

In the last five games played we have seen far too many draws although we must point out its been nearly twenty years since these two nations last met for a game of football. Belgium do come out on top even though they have only won on tow occasions. Now in total the two nations have played seven times, leaving the remaining five games all ending in draws! Could this be a first win for the Republic of Ireland?

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

In the seven games played against each other there have been a total of twenty goals scored altogether which is going to give us a goals per game average of 2.8. It’s a good statistic and with the talents Belgium have on offer surely they can score a few goals against the Irish on Saturday? Id still be inclined to select the below option for this game with it being a good option.

Belgium have won more recently yet they have also lost more than their opponents Republic of Ireland. Belgium are the easy favourites for this game and are still considered contenders to win the competition outright taking the mantle from current holders Spain.

Belgium v Republic of Ireland Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

Saturdays first game of the day will be seen live via ITV 1 and of course in High Definition, in which we get to see one of the tournaments favourites, Belgium, set to face the Republic of Ireland who currently sit above them in Group E. Italy who managed a 2 – 0 win over Belgium in their first game today beat Sweden 1 – 0 and now top the group and into the knock out stages. Sweden sit with two points knowing that only a win against the Belgium can see them qualify.

That means Belgium will need to win both games to progress so pressure is on them and their young side this Saturday. With the Republic of Ireland already set as the tournaments major underdogs they will know they can go out and play without fear and hope they can pull off a win themselves. As surely a win against the Italians is unlikely? Although it could be possible with Italy already knowing they have qualified for the knockout stages of the competition.

Martin O’Neil and his Irish side will go out and play for the lives and country Saturday lunchtime, knowing that Belgium would of taken a knock in confidence when they lost 2 – 0 to Italy recently. A draw in Sweden was tough to take and they really should of won, especially as they know taking points off of Belgium and Italy wont be an easy task to complete.

My predictions for this Group E game does sadly not back our friends across the sea, with the Belgians easily the bookmakers favourites to earn all three points. It is a must for Belgium and I feel they will do it with ease without conceding a goal against the Irish. So for my banker it will be Belgium to win to nil. The next I was going to go for was a draw, but I just don’t want to and hope not also in any regards. So instead I am going to take a first time goalscorer and go for Kevin de Bruyne who is always going to be a threat.
