Sunderland v Southampton Preview, Premiership, Saturday 18th January 2014

Sunderland head into this game on saturday afternoon having had a very tough time of it so far this season which has seen the club lose a manager and win only four of their twenty-one games played. As a result they currently occupy 2nd bottom of the Premiership league table and unless they can turn their form around look destined for relegation come May.

Southampton have been a very entertaining side to watch this season and head into this game having won eight of their twenty-one matches played and currently occupy 9th position in the Premiership league table.

However with news yesterday comfirming that Nicola Cortese had resigned as chairman following a dispute with club owner Katharina Liebherr manager Mauricio Pochettino could also be on his way out as he did suggest last May that he would also quit if Cortese left the club and this has put a very dark shadow over the club at the moment which is obviously not going to help their cause of trying to qualify for European competition next season.

Sunderland Team News:

Carlos Cuéllar is the only player unavailable for the hosts as he continues to recover from a hip injury, so expect manager Gus Poyet to start his strongest lineup avaialable which should see Steven Fletcher and Josmer Altidore leading the attack up front.

Southampton Team News:

Victor Wanyama is unavailable for the visitors as he continues to receive treatment for a leg injury and Pablo Osvaldo is suspended. Calum Chambers will under take a late fitness test as he has been ill recently, but does look like playing in this game. Jay Rodriguez and Ricky Lambert, who have scored 14 goals between them so far in the league this season will lead the attack up front for the visitors.

Sunderland v Southampton Head to Head Statistics:

Saturday lunch time’s game from The Stadium of Light will become the 37th meeting between the two clubs over the years, of which Sunderland have won 11 times (7 at The Stadium of Light), Southampton have won 16 times (5 at The Stadium of Light) and there has been 9 Draws (6 at The Stadium of Light).

The previous 5 meetings below in our head to head statistics show Sunderland with a commanding advantage having won 4 times with Southampton having failed to record a victory and the remaining game finishing all square.

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

84 goals have been scored in the previous 36 games played between the two clubs which provides us with an overall average goals per game statistic of 2.33 and with there having been (41 goals scored at The Stadium of Light) from the previous 18 matches played there, we are provided with an average goals per game statistic of 2.27, we look likely to see only one or two goals scored on saturday afternoon.

Sunderland v Southampton Recent Form (Left to Right)

Sunderland: D L W W W

Southampton: W L L W W

Very little between the two sides on the recent form statistics, both clubs having managed to secure 3 victories from their last 5 matches played, although Sunderland have only been defeated once, with Southampton having suffered 2 defeats.

Sunderland v Southampton Match Betting Odds Market

Sunderland have managed to record some very good victories since the appointment of Gus Poyet and with the club having an excellent record over Southampton in recent season’s they look good value to win this game at a current best price of 11/5 with Totepool (£10 Free Bets for New Customers).

The Draw is also a strong possibility in this game as with two of the last five meetings having finished all square and very little between the two clubs over recent weeks a best price of 23/10 with Sky Bet (£30 Free Bets for New Customers) also looks value here and worth a cover bet in this game.

Southampton have seemed to lose their way in recent weeks and with the news of their Chairman Nicola Cortese having resigned and their manager probably not too far behind, it does seem like Southampton have it all to do here and I am quite surprised to see the online bookmakers having the visitors priced up as the clear favourites to win this game at odds of 6/4 with BetVictor (£25 Free Bets for New Customers).

Sunderland v Southampton Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

It does seem a bit odd that the bookmakers have made Southampton the clear favourites to win this game on saturday afternoon as although they do occupy a much better position in the Premiership league table their form in recent weeks has not been great and when we see that they have not managed to beat Sunderland since 2003 their current price doesn’t provide any value in my opinion.

Sunderland however, seem to be a completely different side under the guidance of Gus Poyet and with victories over Everton and Manchester United in recent weeks the players will certainly be confident of winning this game and with a packed out Stadium of Light crowd fully behind them, they do look the more likely winners of this game for me and look value at their current odds.

The average goals per game statistics suggest this game to see only one or two goals scored on saturday afternoon, so the DRAW @ 23/10 with Sky Bet (£30 Free Bets for New Customers) is well worth getting on as your main cover bet, but I am going to go for the value here and predict Sunderland to WIN @ 11/5 with Totepool (£10 Free Bets for New Customers).
